  • Art Auction to benefit Animal Welfare Coalition

    More than 40 New Mexico artists, including local favorites David Perez Escudero, Amber MacLean, Diane Moreno, Meredith Britt, and David Lobdell, have donated original works to ArtBark, an art auction to benefit the Animal Welfare Coalition Animal Shelter in Las Vegas.

    It’s been about 50 years, but Lurline Bennett still remembers her father stepping in and saving the Castañeda Hotel.

    “The Santa Fe Railroad was just going to tear the Castañeda down and just sell the bricks,” she recalls. “Not one person came forward and said, ‘No, we need to save the Castañeda.’ My father was the only one who said we can’t let that happen. We have to save the building.”

    What a difference 50 years makes.

  • Ward 1 runoff set for Tuesday

    CORRECTION - April 16 - A story in Monday’s Optic about the Ward 1 runoff election should have said that incumbent Tonita Gurule-Giron has a Master’s in Business Administration.

    The last time they faced off, incumbent Tonita Gurule-Giron ended up with just nine more votes than challenger Oliver L’Esperance, sending both candidates to a runoff election.

    With such a razor-thin margin separating the two candidates vying for the Ward 1 city of Las Vegas Council seat, both have been pulling out all the stops.

    SANTA FE — The state agency responsible for protecting children needs more authority to intervene in cases of alleged neglect and abuse when there’s not enough evidence to go to court to remove a child from the home, a top official in Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration told lawmakers on Friday.
