    The three West Las Vegas High School seniors were recognized during the May 14 WLV Schools Board of education meeting.

    A group from Highlands University will represent the only U.S. students participating in a geology conference in Germany in June focused on how ancient mountain ranges and volcanoes grew at the border between Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.

  • Chen named Highlands Professor of the Year

    Highlands University has named marketing professor Chien-Chung Chen Professor of the Year for 2017-18.

    Each spring an independent selection committee composed of students, faculty and staff reviews the nominations for Professor of the Year and selects a winner.

    Joshlyn Simasingh is a Highlands MBA candidate who will complete her degree in July 2018 and is awaiting final acceptance to two law schools. She nominated Chen for Professor of the Year.

  • LCC duo claims first, second place in heavy equipment contest

    Luna Community College’s Vocational/Technical Studies students John Lucero and Tracy Herrera took first and second place, respectively, at the Associated General Contractors of America Heavy Equipment Rodeo on Friday, May 4 in Albuquerque.

    Lucero narrowly beat out Herrera in the excavator simulator competition by a money score of $1,700 to $1,638.

    The competitors had to load a dump truck within four-minute time.

    They are Serenity Romero, kindergarten, and Abrianna Gallegos, first grade.

    Marco Salinas, fifth grade; Mailynn Griego, eighth grade; Faith Lyon, sixth grade; and Ezekiel Gallegos, seventh grade.

    Susan Decker is the new director for the Achieving in Research, Math and Science Center at Highlands University.

    The ARMAS Center provides comprehensive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) support services to students.

  • Student appreciates dedicated instructors

    Luna Community College
    Sandra Maria Garcia was born in Las Vegas, graduated from West Las Vegas High School in 2016 and looks forward to one day earning her degree from Luna Community College.

    As many people seem to be gravitating to other cities and other colleges and universities, Garcia does not consider herself a rebel — rather she describes herself as a good kid and refuses to give up on Las Vegas and northern New Mexico.
