    Question: As a mother of a 16-year-old, 10-year-old and a 5-year-old kindergartner, I have seen the changes that have occurred in education in the past 10 years. Children now are to know how to read, write, add and subtract in kindergarten ­— all halfway through kindergarten. This makes me crazy. I have no patience to try to teach these things. Yet I have to help the kindergartner.

  • East expects to end year with surplus

    For years, the Las Vegas City Schools district has battled with its finances. This time around, however, according to district Superintendent Ruben Cordova, the district is expecting a cash balance at the end of the fiscal year.

    Cordova said he is anticipating a roughly $39,000 cash balance at the end of the fiscal year that ends on June 30.
    “It seems like this year we will stay within our budget,” Cordova told the board during a recent meeting.

  • Los Niños student heading to state Spanish Spelling Bee

    More than 30 students will compete for the honor of being crowned the champion of the 22nd Annual NMABE State Spanish Spelling Bee. The National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, will host the event on Saturday.  

    Clayton Crawford from Los Niños Elementary will represent Las Vegas City Schools at this year’s competition.

  • LCC to host transfer, registration advisement, career day Thursday

    Luna Community College will be having a Transfer, Registration, Advisement and Career Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 at the Media Education Center.

    Throughout the day, current, future, and graduating students will have the opportunity for advisement, talk to representatives of four-year universities about transferring, meet with potential employers and have the opportunity to register early for both the summer and fall semester.

  • Kid doctors tasked with diagnosis

    SHERIDAN, Wyo. — There are perhaps few things more challenging in the medical profession than patient diagnosis — transforming a list of symptoms and a review of medical history into a potentially life-saving conclusion in a short period of time.

    Attempting this feat is even harder when you are 10 years old, but that is exactly what the students in Sheridan County School District 2 Seminar class were tasked with recently.

Throughout April, members of Udall’s staff will host several information sessions across the state for high school students and recent graduates who are interested in applying.
