San Miguel County

San Miguel County commissioners during their Tuesday meeting agreed to apply for a grant to create a coordinator position to oversee early childhood education.

The $150,000 grant would go to the San Miguel County Early Childhood Coalition to pay a coordinator to work with West Las Vegas, Las Vegas City Schools and Luna Community College’s early childhood center in hopes of getting more children to attend school before kindergarten.

According to data, more than 60 percent of the county’s children live in poverty, and 72 percent of children 4 and under are not in school.

The New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department will announce grant recipients by the end of November.
