    • Story Time at Carnegie Library is at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18 in the children’s area of the public library. This week’s book is “Sam and Dave Dig a Hole” by Mac Barnett. Free and open to the public.

    • “Flores and Friends” featuring Yasmin Flores, Linda King, Andre Garcia-Nuthmann will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 at Kennedy Lounge on the Highlands campus. Admission is $10 and it is a fundraiser for the purchase of instrumental music.

    Highlands University

    A “Flores and Friends” music faculty concert at Highlands University Friday evening features 19th and 20th century music ranging from romantic to avant-garde compositions.

    The concert is at 7 p.m. in the Kennedy Alumni Hall, 905 University Ave. Ticket prices are $10. To purchase advance tickets, call Flores at 426-2176.

    • St. Paul’s Peace Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at the church located on the corner of Eighth Street and National Avenue. Tickets are $8 per adult, $4 for children 12 and younger and includes all-you-can-eat pancakes and ham.

    Pecos National Historical Park and other National Park Service units that collect entrance fees are beginning to gauge support for possible changes in park fee rates.

    Pecos National Historical Park has not increased its daily entrance fee since 1998, when it was set at $3 per person age 15 or over. The Pecos National Historical Park annual pass, which allows free annual access for up to four people, has remained at $10 since 1998.

    • Fourth Judicial District Court Appointed Special Advocates needs volunteers. The local CASA program is taking applications for volunteers. Call CASA at 454-0223 or visit the office to work with children who have been removed from their homes. Because of abuse and neglect. Children are in state custody and living in foster care.

    • The Las Vegas Senior Center is sponsoring a free Valentine’s Dance from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13 at the center located on the corner of New Mexico Ave. and Sabino Street in Las Vegas. Live music by Florian Castillo and Molly Martinez have volunteered their musical talents for the dance. Refreshments will be served

  • Yes, I’ve told this story before, but it so appropriate for Valentine’s Day that I thought it should be repeated. This is our favorite Valentine, made by our two little boys a long time ago.

    Our boys, Carl and John, rode the school bus to Sapello every day. They were home by mid-afternoon and always had chores to do (a blessing when one lives on the ranch, but they did not think so.)
