Quietly, the Luna Community College softball program has been building momentum throughout a spring season where the spotlight — for better or worse — has focused on other teams.

This past week, it was the softball Rough Riders’ turn to roar. The team swept visiting Lamar College in a four-game series at Rodriguez Park, a first for a program in only its second season of existence.

Luna won in close fashion the first three games, 7-4, 6-4 and 6-3, then punctuated the homestand — its last of the year — with a 13-5 victory. Jenelle Klassen, also a pitcher, homered in one of the series’ highlights.

Over the weekend, Luna’s Jennifer Incencio belted three home runs as the Rough Riders played a tournament in Colby, Kan., winning one of three games on Saturday.

They lost to host Colby 2-0 before beating Barton 10-2 and losing to Garden City 3-1. They were to play three more games on Sunday, after this issue went to press.

“Our pitchers Jenelle Klassen and Shelby Burbank did good (Saturday), and teamwise our defense has been outstanding,” said first-year head coach Meredith Gilpin.

Gilpin was Dawnette Garcia’s assistant in 2009, the inaugural season of the program; before that, she starred as a player at New Mexico Highlands.
