Thursday, Aug. 9
The Literacy Council is holding a schoolbook giveaway at the TLC Book Bank, located in Southwest Capital Bank, Aug. 9 and 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free educational materials and literature anthologies (some in Spanish), textbooks, and skills workbooks for K-5 are available at no charge to families, educators and home-schoolers. Everyone is welcome.

Saturday, Aug. 11

Sunday, Aug. 12
Annette Clancy Memorial Watercolor and Jewelry Sale to Benefit the AWC Pet Center, Sunday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 113 Bridge, between the Kiva Theater and Popular Dry Goods. Annette’s works and jewelry are being sold at very affordable prices, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Las Vegas/San Miguel animal shelter at 1680 N. Grand and the Animal Welfare Coalition that runs it. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Wednesday, Aug. 15
New Mexico Highlands University will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a traditional matanza pig roast meal for the community and campus Aug. 25 at the university’s Leveo and Patricia Sanchez Family Stadium  on the NMHU campus. The last day to purchase tickets at the university’s Foundation Office, 905 University Ave. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday ­­through Friday, is Aug. 15. No tickets will be available for purchase after Aug. 15 and no tickets will be sold at the gate. For information, call the Foundation Office at 505-454-3248.
