New Mexico Highlands presents a National Day of the Cowboy Art Exhibition in the university’s Ray Drew Gallery from July 8 – Aug. 22. The exhibit features New Mexico artists who have lived the cowboy way. The artists reception will be July 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gallery, which is in Donnelly Library at 802 National Ave. Hours for the Ray Drew Gallery are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Sundays from1 to 5 p.m.

 

Friday, Aug. 3-Saturday, Aug. 4

The Blessing of the Waters ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the Gallinas River Bridge. An artists reception will take place at Gallery 140, located at 140 Bridge St.  will take place after the blessing both days to see their work and talk about the value of the heritage arts in the community. Light refreshments will be served and music will be provided. The exhibit will continue through August, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. There will be extended hours during Heritage Week whenever the flag is flying. See

The Las Vegas Police Department will be at the El Valle Community Center at 11 a.m. to provide a slideshow on active shooter situations to elementary and high school students. Supplies, backpacks and tote bags will be given to all kids in attendance.

Roxanne Swentzell, a pueblo sculptress, writer, and nutritionist, will give a presentation on pueblo food ways in the Ilfeld Auditorium at 5 p.m. as part of Heritage Week. General admission is $5, Friends of the Museum member $3 and children under 12 are free.

The Places with a Past Historic Home Tour, with a theme of “The Rejuvenation of Las Vegas,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The self-guided tour features historic homes and buildings in Las Vegas. Sunday, Aug. 5

The Fifth Annual Salute To The Troops Concert and Dance, hosted by local music act Gonzalo, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Las Vegas Plaza gazebo. The theme is a tribute to Al Hurricane Sr., who passed away in 2017. It will feature La Familia Sanchez, Al Hurricane Jr., Jerry Dean, Erika and Christian Sanchez, Gonzalo and others in a free all-ages show.

The Literacy Council is holding a schoolbook giveaway at the TLC Book Bank, located in Southwest Capital Bank, Aug. 9 and 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free educational materials and literature anthologies (some in Spanish), textbooks, and skills workbooks for K-5 are available at no charge to families, educators and home-schoolers. Everyone is welcome.

The Mora/Colfax Head Start program is recruiting and assisting families in completing enrollment applications for the 2018-19 school year. Children born before Sept. 1, 2015, are age-eligible.
