Santa Fe New Mexican staff

Days left in session: 36

Casting out Columbus?: A bill to change the name of the federal holiday known as Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day in New Mexico cleared a major hurdle Thursday when the state House of Representatives voted 50-12 in favor of House Bill 100, introduced by Democratic Reps. Derrick Lente of Sandia Pueblo and Andrea Romero of Santa Fe.

The U.S. began formally honoring Columbus Day in 1937, but in recent years various states, such as Alaska, and cities, including Santa Fe, have renamed it Indigenous Peoples Day.
