Fall 2018 STEM Santa Fe Expanding Your Horizons Conference

10/13/2018 - 8:00am - 3:00pm

On October 13, 2018, STEM Santa Fe will hold its annual Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference at the Santa Fe Community College.  Girls in fifth through eighth grades from Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico will attend this day-long event designed to inspire and enhance their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).  This conference hopes to address the major gender disparities present in STEM fields; women make up only 15% of the engineering and 25% of the computer and mathematical sciences workforce (NSF, Science & Engineering Indicators, 2016). Less than 10% of employed scientists and engineers are minority women (NSF, Women, Minorities, and People with Disabilities in Science and Engineering, 2015).

We are very excited this year to offer a keynote address by the Director of the National Science Foundation, France Cordova. In addition to this inspiring keynote address, the conference will consist of interactive workshops led by women professionals and a STEM fair which will feature a variety of STEM exhibits and demonstrations.  The girls will get a chance to connect with their peers and professional women who will serve as positive role models, while gaining exposure to the different career possibilities in STEM.  Last year 8th grader Alyssa wrote: “It (EYH) was inspiring and enlightening, and opened many doors and windows in my mind.”  Seventh grader Cheyenne noted: “The experience I’ve had is an experience I can’t get anywhere else.”

After the great success of our previous conferences, we are increasing our capacity to 200 girls.  Registration is open now!  Space is limited. For more information, including highlights and summary reports of previous EYH Conferences, and to register, visit us at www.stemsantafe.org
