Grammy Award-winning bluesy roots-rock band Alabama Shakes, one of the hottest bands of 2016, will be performing live in Taos this summer.  The concert, an AMP Concerts and Walking Rain Productions event sponsored by the Town of Taos, will be held outdoors at Kit Carson Park on Saturday.

Alabama Shakes’ 2015 release, Sound and Color, was nominated for five Grammy awards, including Album of the Year and Best Alternative Music Album.  On Feb. 15, the band was awarded three Grammys for Sound and Color and was also named one of the top albums of the year by the New York Times, NPR and Rolling Stone.
Dawes, a Los Angeles-based alternative folk band, will perform as the opening act.

“We are very excited to welcome Alabama Shakes to Taos in August,” Taos Marketing and Tourism Director Karina Armijo said. “There could be no better place out west to see them, with our mountain vistas, great hiking, brilliant sunsets, and local brews. Taos will be hopping that weekend so we encourage travelers to buy their tickets soon and book their trips early.”

Alabama Shakes was founded in Athens, Ala., in 2009. The band’s blues-rock style has been compared to both Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, thanks to the powerful and soulful voice of frontwoman Brittany Howard. Howard has also cited such acts as AC/DC and David Bowie as influences, but sees the band’s sound as unique and hard to categorize.
