Is The '11 HU Football Team Shades Of The Great '68 Team?

After the first four games, winning one in convincing style, I was beginning to think this '11 HU football squad had "The Right Stuff." .However, after last weekend's embarassing 15-14 loss to a then-winless Western State (Colorado), with 21 penalties totaling 174 yards, I and many other hundreds of supporters had our bubble broken. This is more like the Cowboys who keep shooting themself in the foot! If the 'Pokes can bring down the number of penalties per game by at least one-half (10), they will be a great football team,

Now let's look at what the great '68 HU football team, coached by legendary John Levra did as a NAIA team...

NMHU 34, Simon Fraser 9

NMHU 72 Hiram Scott 0

NMHU 28 Adams State 6

NMHU 49 Westminster 0

NMHU 85 Colorado Mines 14

NMHU 48 Colorado State (Pueblo) 10

Final NAIA ranking...#1

Final AP Poll...#

(North Dakota State,San Diego State, Univ. Tennessee/Chatanooga)

NMHU was led by 3-time Little All-American running back Carl Garrett, drafted in the 8th round by the New England Patriots and later was the '69 AFC Rookie-of-the-Year, beating out OJ Simpson. When Garrett was picked in the NFL draft, he predicted he would beat out OJ in a press interview with then NMHU Ass't Sports Information Director, (Norm Taylor was NMHU SID) making national sports headlines. Sure enough, Garrett did!
