  • Montaño to play college softball

For eight years, Michael Quintana has been counting on Samantha Montaño.

For eight years, she has delivered.

The dependability of the Robertson senior shortstop was cited as a major factor in an offer to continue her softball career (and education) at Dodge City Community College in 2017. Montaño on Dec. 2 signed a letter of intent, with a purple Conquistadors jersey and balloons in the school colors of purple and gold nearby.

“I visited the campus, and I liked it,” Montaño said. “It’s a small town.”

  • Former NMHU coach in spotlight

John Fassel, who served as head coach at New Mexico Highlands in 2003-04, has found himself in charge of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams.

Fassel, previously the team’s special teams coordinator, was promoted to the head coaching post on an interim basis to finish the season, which wraps up on New Year’s Day.

The move was made after the Rams fired Jeff Fisher after a Dec. 12 loss to Atlanta, dipping the team to 4-9 in its first year back in L.A. Fisher was 31-45-1 in five years as head coach of the Rams.

  • Stu Clark Tourney this week

Here comes the 63rd annual Stu Clark Tournament.

One of the longest-running tourneys in the state, the Stu will run Wednesday through Friday at the Wilson Complex on the New Mexico Highlands University campus.

Tournament passes are available for $12 each from both local school districts’ athletics offices and from Stu Clark committee members.

The tournament tips off with Atrisco Heritage and Sandia Prep at 1 p.m., followed by Moriarty vs. St. Pius X at 2:30 on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

  • Hoops in the valley - Lady Dons...

Ten Lady Dons scored at least two points apiece — seven players in the opening quarter — as West Las Vegas routed Bernalillo 74-26 on Tuesday night.

The game was held at Valley Middle School’s Griego Gym, part of what has become an annual occurrence.

  • Junior Hackers hitting stride

Together as a team for only a year and a half, the Las Vegas Junior Hackers 14-and-under travel baseball squad recently captured the gold first-place trophy at the Toys for Tots tournament in Carlsbad.

The championship rounded out a productive autumn for the Hackers, who placed second in similar USSSA events in Amarillo and El Paso. They also competed in an Albuquerque tournament, although they did not place.

The team is coached by Roy Pacheco, who said he’s “amazed” by how well the players have progressed in a limited time together.

Every bowl game is special in its own way and for the third straight year we are here with a reason to watch each and every one. And to pick the winners, which may also provide a reason to watch. Strictly for entertainment purposes, of course. (Part two of a series.)

  • RHS girls stun No. 1 Hope

Overcoming a 12-point deficit early in the final quarter, Robertson rallied for a 52-50 upset of No. 1 Hope Christian on Saturday night at Mike Marr Gym.

The Lady Cards snapped Hope’s 18-game winning streak dating back to Jan. 14. The Huskies, who won the Class 4A state championship this past March, had started this season on a 7-0 tear.

  • Dons doom Demons in OT thriller

Falling backward, West Las Vegas freshman John Balizan tossed up a wish of a three-point shot as the buzzer sounded to end regulation.

Balizan was on his back near the far right corner when the basketball flicked neatly through nylon.

Basket good. On to overtime we go.

And then the host Dons made that heroic shot stand for something, outscoring Class 6A Santa Fe High 11-2 in overtime to win 58-49 before a pumped-up Gillie Lopez Gym this past Saturday night.
