  • Local sportscasters win award

    When fans of West Las Vegas’ football and basketball teams can’t make it to their favorite teams’ games, Richard Tripp and Gary Chavez are there to say, “No problem — we’ve got you covered.”

    Tripp and Chavez recently earned the New Mexico Broadcasters Association award for Sports Play by Play of the Year in recognition of their sportscasting on KNMX-AM 540 in the year 2010-11.

    The NMBA announced awards last week but made them official on June 10.

  • Barrel racer among leaders at...

    Through Wednesday night, Sammi Lane remained within striking distance of a national championship in barrel racing at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.

    Lane, a junior at New Mexico Highlands University, was in fourth place in the event standings through three rounds of competition. Only the final round remained to be played out as the weeklong CNFR nears its conclusion on Saturday.

    It’s been the best of times, and it’s been the worst of times, all in the same year for Marka Anne Garcia.
    Garcia, who graduated from Robertson in May, swept skills competitions for Golden Arm and Golden Glove honors at the North-South softball weekend and was a most valuable player on the North squad.

    Whether his uniform was Cardinal red and white or Don green and gold, Nicholas Aragon was known for giving his baseball teams a shot in the arm.
    The same held true over the weekend with Aragon wearing the colors of the North All-Stars.
    The recent WLV graduate hit safely in each of three games to help the North defeat the South twice and take the series.

    La Plaza Little League is winding down the regular season this week, crowning champions in its majors and minors baseball divisions.
    Single-elimination tournaments in both divisions conclude on Saturday afternoon at the Rodriguez Park complex — minors championship at 1, majors at 4, and an announcement of the league’s all-star lineups as part of closing ceremonies to follow the games.
