  • Kanneh heads to camp with Browns

    For the past couple years, New Mexico has been home to Jordan Campbell and Abdul Kanneh.

    Now both former Highlands Cowboys are hoping that Ohio will become the place they hang their football helmets.

    Kanneh reportedly has accepted an invitation to rookie minicamp with the Cleveland Browns.

    And as the Optic reported earlier this week, Jordan Campbell inked a deal to join the Cincinnati Bengals.

    Both went undrafted in the NFL Draft last weekend but were among the first wave of players to draw interest in free agency.

    April 30:
    Charette Lakes: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on perch.  
    Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 35 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, parachute adams, elk hair caddis, red San Juan worms, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

  • Robertson’s Montoya third in...

    For champion grapplers like Rico Montoya, wrestling season never really ends.

    Montoya, who earned his third straight state championship in February, recently brought home a third-place finish from the Virginia Beach, Va., nationals, a tournament run by the National High School Coaches Association.

    The Robertson sophomore competed in the 120-pound weight class, which he’s maintained as a prep the last couple years.

  • NMHU loses but keeps division...

    Chase Lacomb drove in four runs and hit 3 for 4 with a grand slam, a double and a walk, leading Colorado State-Pueblo past New Mexico Highlands 6-4 on Sunday at Brandt Park.
    It gave the visiting ThunderWolves a split of the four-game series, not enough to lift CSUP past NMHU in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.

  • State track and field list...

    The following is an updated list of the Las Vegas area’s regular-season qualifiers for the 2013 state track and field championships, as of Sunday.

    The list is gleaned from information reported by MaxPreps.com. There are a couple more qualifying meets, including the district championship events.

    Mora will host the District 2-2A meet Friday afternoon, with Mora and Pecos tracksters aiming to make the cut for the small-school state meet May 10-11 at UNM Track and Field Stadium in Albuquerque.

  • Free clinic for soccer kids on...

    Members of Challenger Sports’ British Soccer Camp staff are scheduled to run a series of free skills clinic sessions on Wednesday, May 15, at the Commerce Street field complex.

    The coaches will also be looking to provide information on their upcoming British Soccer Camp program.

    The free clinic is open to youth soccer players, parents and coaches. From 5 to 6 p.m., a session will be held for players age 3 to 6. Then from 6 to 7 p.m., a session will be held for players 7 years and older.
