  • Honor roll for NMHU tracksters

    Proving her prowess is not limited to the track, New Mexico Highlands University’s Jillisa Grant led a strong spring for the Cowgirl track and field team in the classroom as well.

    Six Highlands athletes earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic honors, with Grant being named to the league’s All-Academic First Team. A junior from Spanish Town, Jamaica, she has a 3.81 grade point average in exercise and sport science.

  • All-state team has four locals

    There’s good news for local high school softball teams — and bad news for the rest of the state.

    First, the good news. Four Meadow City players earned spots on the Class 3A all-state team just released by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. Three West Las Vegas Lady Dons — Gabriella Griego, Larrissa Gallegos and Mariquita Zamora — and Robertson’s Ashley Jaramillo were recognized on the all-state squad.

    Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd delivered, and the Mavs suddenly find themselves only one win away from the NBA finals.

    Gilbert “Gillie” Lopez was born on Jan. 11, 1922, and passed away on May 18, 2005. In the 83 years he lived on this earth, he left a mark that his family can be proud of. We will attempt to look at his life and recall some of the things that made the man.

    A sea of rippling muscles, etched-in details showcased by tanning and skimpy posing suits, will be on display this Saturday at the Fitness New Mexico and Musclemania Championships, a bodybuilding competition at Hard Rock Casino in Albuquerque.

    Las Vegas’ Stephanie Trujillo-Gonzales will be among the competitors vying for prizes — and showing off the hard-won efforts of months of religious pre-contest dieting and daily workouts with free weights, machines and cardiovascular training.

  • NMHU slugger honored in region

    New Mexico Highlands outfielder Clay Mohr has been named to the 2011 Rawlings American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Central Region Second Team.

    The honor was announced Wednesday.

    Mohr finished the season with a .387 batting average. Mohr connected for 12 doubles, five triples and three home runs over the course of the season.
