  • LV wrestlers excel in AAU tourney

    Not content with a T-shirt, a postcard or a keychain, Rico Montoya had a different souvenir in mind from his summer trip to Montana.

    So Montoya picked up a couple of national championship medals and one runner-up prize to hang on his wall.

    Montoya was one of four Las Vegas wrestlers who competed in the AAU Grand Nationals for Greco-Roman, freestyle, and folkstyle wrestling June 11-12 in Butte, Mont.

    The foursome was part of a 15-wrestler contingent from New Mexico, said Marcos Martinez, one of the group’s coaches and an accomplished grappler himself.

    One of the invitees to compete in the just-for-fun skills challenge on the eve of the series, West Las Vegas’ Michael Armijo volunteered to give that spot up in order to focus on the actual series.

  • RMAC survey: CCU tops in...

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. —  The Cougars of Colorado Christian University won their third straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Cup, announced earlier this month by RMAC Commissioner Joel R. Smith. This is the fourth year of the RMAC Sportsmanship Cup. University of Nebraska at Kearney won the inaugural Sportsmanship Cup in 2006-07.

  • Hackers hot in Jalapeno softball...

    Adult softball teams around the state are learning what those in the Meadow City already know — the Las Vegas Hackers are pretty darn tough.

    The team, which competes in the City of Las Vegas adult league, won the recent U.S. Slowpitch Softball Association’s “Jalapeño Popper” tournament in Albuquerque.

    The Hackers went 5-1 in the double-elimination event, defeating a strong Evolve Fitness group in the second of two meetings that decided the championship.

  • North wins

    West Las Vegas’ Dean Gallegos led the North to a 2-1 series win in the Class 3A North-South All-Star baseball games this past weekend in Socorro.

    The North, which also featured WLV’s Jared Gallegos and Mike Armijo and Robertson’s Adrian Jaramillo, had lost Friday’s opener before sweeping a doubleheader Saturday, 12-11 and 16-11.

    For the second year in a row, Trementina native (and Robertson High graduate) Jesse Estrada will be part of a four-person contingent representing New Mexico Highlands University in the College National Finals Rodeo.

    The CNFR, presented by the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, kicks off Sunday and runs all week in Casper, Wyo.
