  • Mora Little League under way

    Mora Little League opening ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 18, at the Little League Field in Holman.

    The color guard made up of men  from the VFW presented the colors and the national anthem was played   followed by a blessing buy Father John Mc Hugh.

    Members of the Mora baseball team lined up and Ricky Padilla threw the opening pitch.

  • Three locals all-state baseball

    Las Vegas high school baseball hit a triple when the all-state teams were announced this past week.

    West Las Vegas senior Jared Gallegos and Robertson’s Nicholas Aragon and Girard Maestas all earned selection to the Class 3A all-state team.

    Gallegos was chosen as one of six first-team all-state pitchers. He also made the second team as an outfielder.

    As one of two main starting pitchers for the Dons this past season, Gallegos went 3-3 and posted a 5.35 earned run average with 67 strikeouts and 15 walks.

  • Dons skipper leads North

    Dean Gallegos, who has guided the West Las Vegas Dons baseball team back to the postseason two years running, will head the coaching staff for the North All-Stars in the upcoming Class 3A baseball showcase event. The North-South baseball games are scheduled for June 9-11 in Socorro. Joining Gallegos in the annual all-star contest will be two of his Dons team leaders — outfielder Michael Armijo and pitcher-outfielder Jared Gallegos — as well as Robertson shortstop Adrian Jaramillo.  Meanwhile, several area softball players were honore

  • Graham sixth in heptathlon

    All-American Angella Graham placed sixth in the heptathlon, racking up 5,282 points Thursday in the opening day of competition at the NCAA Division II national outdoor track and field championships in Charlotte, N.C. The New Mexico Highlands University standout later finished fifth in the triple jump. Aisha Adams, a junior at Angelo State, won the women’s heptathlon with 5,698 points. Trailing Adams were Angelo State teammate Chrystal Ruiz (5,572), Maddy Outman of Indiana, Pa.

  • Booth named for Bernie Allingham

    The late, great Bernie Allingham was recognized at the most recent regular meeting of the Las Vegas City School Board of Education.

    “Throughout the years Bernie worked with KFUN bringing local sports broadcast to people’s homes. Not only did he call the play-by-play, he also interviewed the kids and highlighted their academic and athletic achievements,” Montaño said.

    Montaño said Allingham broadcast all local sports, including Highlands, Robertson and West Las Vegas games.

  • Rosie: Still spiking

    Old habits die hard. Even the good ones.

    Rosie Lanphere, who starred on the volleyball court for Robertson High, is competing as part of the U.S. club volleyball circuit and is days away from a major tournament.

    “I was invited to join an adult volleyball club in Albuquerque named Hogan’s Heroes,” Lanphere told the Optic. “We are sponsored to go to the national tournament.”

    The tourney is the  U.S. Open National Volleyball Championships Club Tournament, June 2-5 in Phoenix.
