  • Nip-tuck East-West softball...

In a day of wild rallies and photo finishes, Robertson and West Las Vegas battled to a split Saturday in the final softball doubleheader of the regular season.

Each team had something at stake in terms of state tournament seeding (announced Sunday as this issue was going to press). And they both played like it.

West Las Vegas won the opener 13-11 on Larrissa Gallegos’ walk-off two-run bomb in the bottom of the eighth inning.

  • Jump for joy!

    A child did lead them.

Robertson freshman Kristen Montaño led off a successful state track meet by winning the girls’ long jump, clearing 17 feet, 2 inches.

Montaño, who built up a list of state-qualifying performances over the second half of the season, won by nearly a half foot over runner-up Dionna Montoya, a Pojoaque senior.

That victory set the tone for a strong weekend for locals at the meet, held at UNM’s track complex.
