    The tourney runs through Saturday.

  • New Mexico Bowl is Saturday

    The Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE — Two teams that ended their regular-season schedules in disappointing fashion will meet at University Stadium on Saturday, when Nevada faces Arizona in the New Mexico Bowl.

Nevada (7-5, 4-4 Mountain West) got off to a 6-1 start to become eligible for a bowl.

But an overtime loss to San Diego State sent the Wolf Pack into a 1-4 tailspin to close the season.

  • Mora wins Lady Lion Classic

In 2011-12, Mora captured an early-season championship in Santa Rosa’s Lady Lion Classic and went on to a district title and deep state tournament run.

The Rangerettes look like they want some more where that came from.

Mora improved to 4-0 and repeated as champions of the Lady Lion Classic over the weekend, finishing the three-day event by defeating Española Valley’s junior varsity 62-44 in the championship game on Saturday night.

  • Lopez’s foul shots lift Cowgirls

Her nickname is “The Silent Assassin,” but Alyssa Lopez was anything but quiet in crunch time on Friday night in Gunnison, Colo.

Lopez snagged a defensive rebound, drew a foul, then sank two free throws in the closing seconds to lift New Mexico Highlands’ women to a 67-65 triumph at Western State Colorado.

She finished with a team-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal in 37 minutes of work. She was a perfect 8 for 8 at the charity stripe, offsetting a difficult night from the floor (3-for-13 shooting).
