  • Robertson netters head to state

Once again, both boys’ and girls’ tennis programs at Robertson High will vie for state team championships this coming weekend in Albuquerque.

But first, led by a pair of district singles champions, the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals go for individual hardware Wednesday and Thursday at the Jerry Cline Complex in the heart of the Duke City’s Northeast Heights.

  • Lady Card golfers win title

Enduring a tough challenge Monday, the Robertson girls’ golf team held on to score a district championship.

The victory provides ample momentum as the Lady Cardinals and head coach Gene Gurule prepare for next week’s state tournament. State for Class 3A is May 9-11 at New Mexico Tech in Socorro.

The RHS girls qualified the necessary three legs this past fall (team scores of 395 at Ladera and Los Alamos in September and a 377 at NMHU in October).

Gurule guided the RHS girls to a third-place team finish in 2009.

  • Mora, Pecos in state track meet

The following Mora and Pecos athletes are slated to compete in the small-school (Class 1A-2A) state track and field championships May 5-6 at the University of New Mexico track in Albuquerque. Also listed are their top qualifying efforts of the season in their respective events.

    • Yeshemabet Turner, Pecos, in the girls’ long jump (a state-best 17-10), triple jump (a state-best 37-9), high jump (5-0), 100-meter dash (12.61), 200-meter dash (26.63);

  • Cowboys finish with a flourish

As the top seed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball tournament, New Mexico Highlands will open the postseason against sixth-seeded Regis at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Kearney, Neb.

The Cowboys, who’d clinched the top seed a week earlier, concluded the regular season Saturday at Metro State in Denver. The Roadrunners, incidentally, are the No. 4 seed in the RMAC and play No. 3 Mesa State at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the tourney’s opening game. Host Nebraska-Kearney is the No. 2 seed and tangles with No. 5 Colorado State-Pueblo for a 7 p.m. nightcap.

  • Horsemen netters edge Robertson...

Miranda Garcia and Juliana Guerin have been an unstoppable combination this season in doubles tennis, and that held true over the weekend in the district tournament hosted by Robertson High.

Garcia and Guerin toppled the St. Michael’s pair of Paloma Gomez and Nada Mohammed 7-5, 6-3, 6-3, to score the Lady Cardinals’ lone win in the girls’ team competition.

The Lady Horsemen, a 5-1 victor in Saturday’s team final, and Robertson both advance to state this week in Albuquerque.

  • RHS district track champs

For the first time in at least recent history, Robertson is a dual champion in District 2-3A track and field.

The Cardinals, coached by Mike Boyle, and Lady Cardinals, coached by Benny Ortiz, earned that distinction Saturday at St. Michael’s, edging the home team for the titles.

In the process, RHS gained several new individual qualifiers for the state meet, to be held Friday and Saturday at the UNM track complex.

  • Dons, Cards slide to 4th, 5th

By now, the Meadow City’s high school baseball teams know who they’ll be matched up with in the first round of the state tournament AKA regional round.

The seedings for Robertson and West Las Vegas arguably could have been dropped a bit by doubleheader defeats both sustained on the last weekend of the regular season.

WLV lost 6-2 and 5-2 at Pojoaque. RHS fell 18-10 and 17-1 to Raton. Instead of either school grabbing second place in District 2-3A, the Dons and Cardinals landed in fourth and fifth behind St. Mike’s, Pojoaque and Raton.

  • Little League

The following are the baseball and softball scores reported to the Optic by La Plaza Little League and Las Vegas Little League for the past week’s action.

  • Lady Cardinals upset St. Mike...

Seven Lady Horseman errors helped visiting Robertson pull off one of its better wins of the season Tuesday, a 7-2 nod at St. Michael’s in Santa Fe.

“We needed it,” said RHS head coach Chris Najar.

It’s been a season of building and learning for the Lady Cardinals, now 5-11 and 2-7 in District 2-3A. RHS lost a half dozen starters from last year’s team but have coalesced into a generally tight-knit group that has improved over the season.
