Pecos’ Johnny Vigil and Aaron Lujan have been named to the Class 2A boys’ basketball all-state second team by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

Wagon Mound’s Eric Olguin was honored with selection to the Class B boys’ all-state first team; Trojan teammate Jose Aguilar was tabbed to the second team.

  • Isotopes have plenty of major...

ALBUQUERQUE — Life for an Albuquerque Isotope — or for any minor league baseball player for that matter — is all about upheaval.

The Isotopes that won their division in 2012 with an 80-64 record and contributed to a good showing by the parent Los Angeles Dodgers (86-76, second in the NL West) aren’t exactly the same club that takes the field this week for the beginning of the Pacific Coast League season.

  • Merged leagues; distinct...

In a quiet merger conducted this past winter, the Meadow City’s two Little Leagues chose to combine their boards into one.

The change may not seem apparent to fans who turn out for the games, which begin for Las Vegas Little League with opening ceremonies this Saturday at Keyes Park. (Games run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a one-hour break at 10 a.m. for the ceremonies themselves.)

La Plaza Little League’s opening day is slated for late April.
Both leagues will maintain distinct schedules and operate under their existing charters.

  • Cowgirls cap weekend sweep

A clean sweep of both Black Hills State and Chadron State over the weekend gave New Mexico Highlands’ softball team a boost as the season enters its final month.

The Cowgirls improved to 14-21-1 overall and 7-15-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Highlands defeated BHSU 7-2 and Chadron 7-3 on Saturday in town, duplicating the previous day’s sweep of those teams.

Highlands and head coach Shellie Broyles are on a four-game tear, reversing the six-game skid they’d been on entering the weekend of RMAC pod play.

  • Noah’s (shooting) arc

Las Vegas native Noah Leger won the 2013 Southwest Regional Elks Hoop Shot Free Throw Contest championship on March 23 in Dallas.

Leger represented New Mexico after winning the state level competition, advancing from the local contest sponsored by the Las Vegas Elks Lodge.

Leger won the boys’ 12-13 age division by swishing 22 free throws in 25 attempts, beating the second-place finisher by one shot.

  • Netters split with Hope

In home tennis action this past week, Robertson’s boys dominated Hope Christian 8-1 while the Lady Cardinals fell 7-2.

On the boys’ side, the Cardinals’ top five singles competitors — David Romero, Nick Newman, Michael Salas, Daniel Hasch and Marcos Gallegos — each won their matches. Lawrence Marquez “lost a tough one,” said RHS head coach Roman Fulgenzi.

Marquez and Hasch paired up to win their doubles contest, as did the teams of Romero-Newman and Salas-Gallegos.

  • Chavez off to a good start

Defending state champion Alonzo Chavez cruised to victory in three events this past Thursday at the Pojoaque Valley Invitational, highlighting a solid showing by area track and field athletes in Jacona.

Chavez won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:14.23, the 1,600-meter run in 4:33.43 and the Chris Peterson Memorial 800-meter run in 2:02.35. He qualified for state in each event.
