  • Fourth-ranked Lopers drop...

    Facing the fourth-ranked wrestling team in the nation (NCAA Division II), the Highlands Cowboys took their lumps on Thursday evening in Kearney, Neb.

    No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney prevailed 41-9, with the Cowboys’ only wins at 197 and heavyweight. Luke McPeek pinned eighth-ranked Matt Farrell in 48 seconds, turning a reversal into a fall. Farrell led 4-1 when he took McPeek down with 2:18 left in the opening period. But McPeek reversed and got the Loper onto his back.

  • No. 1 over No. 2, just barely

    A dream matchup between the top two Class 3A girls’ basketball teams lived up to its billing Wednesday night in Jacona.

    Top-ranked Pojoaque Valley (19-0, 3-0) clung to its perch in a 53-50 thriller against visiting West Las Vegas (13-6, 1-2).

    But Coach Jose Medina’s Lady Dons came closer than any team has this season to beating the Elkettes. Pojoaque had defeated every foe by 11 points or more prior to Wednesday night.

    The Elkettes are defending state champions under Lanse Carter.

  • Lopsided win for Robertson girls

    Eleven players got into the scorebook for host Robertson on Wednesday night as the Lady Cardinals coasted to a 59-20 win over Raton.

    It was the first District 2-3A victory for Robertson in three tries. Raton rremains winless in district play.

    Brooke Knezevich nearly matched the Lady Tigers’ point production by herself, tallying 17 to lead the Lady Cards.

  • Rangerettes own OT vs. McCurdy

    Amanda Padilla knocked down five three-pointers on her way to 21 points Wednesday night, leading Mora to a 57-51 overtime triumph over McCurdy.

    But it was Angelica Abeyta’s short-range bucket that saved the day for the Rangerettes. Mora trailed 43-41 with two seconds left in regulation when Abeyta scored to tie the game and force overtime.

    Mora owned the extra session, outgunning the Bobcats 14-8 for a key non-district win.

  • Hernandez makes Centennial team

    Hector Hernandez, who captured an NAIA national heavyweight championship for New Mexico Highlands in 1987, has been named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Centennial Team in wrestling.

    The list of a dozen elite wrestlers in the 100-year history of the RMAC was announced Wednesday by the league office in Colorado Springs, Colo.

    The RMAC is the fourth oldest conference in the country, and the most historic in the western U.S.

  • Courageous Journey: NMHU runner...

    New Mexico Highlands University cross country standout Laurent Ngirakamaro made a remarkable personal journey from genocide in civil war-torn Burundi in east Africa to become a three-time NCAA All-American.

    Ngirakamaro ran for the Cowboys in the November 2008 NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships, placing 25th out of a field of 184 runners during a snowy, 20-degree race in Slippery Rock, Pa.

    He finished 11th in 2007, leading his NMHU team to a top-10 national finish.

    On Saturday, Feb. 7, the New Mexico Highlands Exercise and Sports Sciences Club will be teaming up with the New Mexico Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to host a Girls and Women Sports Night at the Wilson Complex.

  • Maldonado 'disappointed,...

    Mike Maldonado hopes to be reinstated as head coach of West Las Vegas football and boys’ track. But he said he entertains no illusions about that possibility.

    Maldonado was informed by Superintendent Jim Abreu that he will not be retained in either capacity, effective immediately. Maldonado, who also teaches at the high school, coached football for two seasons and track for one.

    The spring track and field preseason begins in a couple of weeks.

  • WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Dons OK without...

    Even without Adrian Rivera in the lineup, the West Las Vegas Dons bullied Raton on Friday for a 59-35 road rout.

    WLV improves to 2-0 in District 2-3A with a 2008 state final rematch on tap for Thursday night at Gillie Lopez Gym; Raton slips to 0-2.

    The Dons, missing Rivera due to illness, gained the lead at 6-4 and did not trail the rest of the night.

    West led 13-9 after the first period, 27-16 at half, and 38-22 through three quarters.

  • Don wrestlers 4th in Trinidad;...

    Eight was enough.

    West Las Vegas’ wrestling team, taking just eight grapplers — six short of the full 14, wrangled a fourth-place finish in the 14-team Gene Gagliardi Invitational this past Saturday in Trinidad, Colo.

    John Armijo pinned all five of his opponents, including Jacob Bookout of Pueblo (Colo.) Central in the final, to win the 171-pound division for West.

    Rosendo “Ross” Valdez (125 lbs.), Mike Jaramillo (140) and Conrad Mares (160) also reached the finals, finishing second.
