  • Isotopes fall to .500

The Albuquerque Isotopes fell to the .500 mark Saturday night, dropping the opener of their home series with division rival Oklahoma City, 3-1.

Albuquerque (8-8) has generally found ways to score runs this spring, but the ‘Topes struggled against the RedHawks.

Alex Castellanos drove in the lone Isotopes run when he singled to bring home Elian Herrera in the bottom of the fourth inning.

As a team, the ‘Topes managed just four hits.

  • Pecos track teams fourth in own...

Pecos’ track and field teams corralled twin fourth-place showings in their own Pecos Invite this past week.
The Lady Panthers trailed overall winner Santa Rosa, Cuba and Cimarron on the girls’ side.
The Panthers placed behind winner Santa Rosa, Cimarron and Academy for Technology and the Classics on the boys’ side.
Pecos head coach Leroy Barela said the meet was ended early due to inclement weather.
Weather also forced the postponement of the Meadow City Invite, now set for Monday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.

  • Vatos earn playoff nod

New Mexico Highlands University’s Vatos rugby club has earned a spot in the Division III college playoffs after a victorious run in the recent regional college tournament in Tucson, Ariz.

  • Luna softball making strides

When Nate Trujillo took over the Luna Community College softball program late in the offseason, he was — by his own admission — “overwhelmed.”

A few months later, the Rough Riders are holding up quite nicely at a respectable 17-24 that includes a recent win over the No. 9 team in their national junior college ranks. In their first year with a conference affiliation after laboring as an independent for the program’s first several seasons, they are 8-12 and in line for a trip to the postseason tournament.

  • One race finish disputed

One of the more dramatic finishes of the day in this past Saturday’s West Las Vegas Middle School Invite came in the boys’ 800-meter run.

A late surge by West’s Miguel Coca gave him a split-second, photo-finish win over Memorial’s Leandro Garduño — or did it?

Garduño’s mother Maria questioned the official outcome of the race, producing home video and still images that appear to show her son finishing just ahead of Coca.
