  • District wrestling tourney...

    For more than a decade, Robertson has used the district wrestling tournament as a springboard to glory in the state championship competition.

    The Cardinals have won three straight state titles and six of the last seven.

    RHS is again a favorite in the District 1A-3A duals, set to begin around 9 a.m. Saturday in Tucumcari.

    Daniel Martinez (152) has earned a slew of Outstanding Wrestler honors at various tournaments and is a two-time state champ as a sophomore.

    Wally Diaz (140) has three state titles to his credit and is in his senior campaign.

  • Rough Riders split with Dodge...

    Isaiah Dominguez gave the Luna Community College Rough Riders all the insurance they could have asked for on Monday afternoon.

    The Las Cruces freshman smashed a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring Manuel Chavez, Ricardo Taddy and himself to increase Luna’s lead to 8-3.

    Then Rough Rider pitcher Eric Jaramillo and the defense held up in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory over visiting Dodge City Community College.

    Earlier, Dodge City won the doubleheader's first game 13-2.

  • East-West boys' varsity...

    West Las Vegas WILL host Robertson in boys’ basketball Friday night.

    But the East-West faceoff will not include varsity teams. Because of an overscheduling violation by West, the schools will meet only in freshman and junior varsity games. First game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. (new time) at Gillie Lopez Gym.

  • Last chance to see NMHU...

    If a college wrestling meet can figure into your Valentine’s Day plans, New Mexico Highlands will provide everything but the candlelight and wine.

    Saturday’s dual meet with Colorado State-Pueblo will be the last chance to see the Highlands wrestling team at home this season.  First match begins at 7 p.m. at the Wilson Complex.

    In recent weeks, the Cowboys , coached by Doug Moses, have battled some of the top-rated squads in NCAA Division II.

  • Outlaws stun Razorbacks

    Las Vegas Outlaws surprised the nationally ranked New Mexico Razorbacks 26-8 Saturday at Perkins Stadium, site of the TeamBuilders Bowl, the season kickoff event for the New Mexico Football Alliance, a "semi-pro" football league with national affiliations.

    Former West Las Vegas quarterback Mike Martinez was voted Most Valuable Player by an ad-hoc media panel covering the game. Martinez overcame a shaky start and hooked up with Donovan Nance, Daniel White, Henry Montoya for touchdown passes. And fullback Frederick Gilford added a 28-yard TD run in the third quarter.

  • LV Outlaws to host bowl game...

    Some of the Meadow City’s premier past high school and college football players will suit up for the fledgling Las Vegas Outlaws “semi-pro” gridiron team in its second full season of competition.

    The season kicks off Saturday with the TeamBuilders Bowl at Perkins Stadium. The game — pitting the Outlaws against the New Mexico Razorbacks — begins at 2 p.m., but the action commences an hour earlier with a lineup of entertainment designed to pump up the home crowd.

  • Third quarter dooms RHS girls;...

    Santa Fe Indian School and nimble point guard Jenine Coriz didn’t do anything fancy.

    They just plain outworked Robertson in the pivotal third quarter of Thursday night’s District 2-3A girls’ basketball clash at Mike Marr Gym.

    Coriz scored 10 of her 17 points in that period as the Lady Braves outscored their hosts 20-3 to seize a 48-35 lead.

    The Lady Cardinals came to life in the final period, pressing and attacking with the urgency they lacked the previous eight minutes. But they ultimately came up just shy in a 51-49 defeat.

  • Rangerettes clinch top spot in...

    Once again, the road to state in District 4-2A girls’ basketball will go through Mora.

    The Rangerettes clinched the top seed in this coming week’s district tournament by defeating Pecos 53-44 on Wednesday evening at Montoya Gym.

    With one game — for Mora, it’s Saturday at Monte del Sol — remaining in the regular season, the Rangerettes are 19-6 overall and 5-0 in 4-2A. Pecos’ Lady Panthers are 13-11 and 3-2.

  • Cowboys howl at Wolves for Win...

    Remaining in first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West Division, the New Mexico Highlands University men’s basketball team asserted its dominance Tuesday night in a 75-58 romp at Colorado State-Pueblo.

    Highlands picked up its 18th win in 24 tries under coach Joe Harge, who has engineered the biggest single-season turnaround in league history. NMHU is 18-6 overall and 12-4 in the RMAC, a half  game ahead of Fort Lewis in the West division.

  • Routs mark Thursday hoops slate

    Three District 2-3A boys’ basketball games.

    Thursday night’s most compelling game in the snoozefest took place at Mike Marr Gym, where 2-3A leader St. Michael’s — the No. 2 ranked team in the state at 16-7 overall and 7-0 in district — methodically blew open a close game with a big fourth quarter to defeat Robertson 43-30.
