  • State softball brackets set

Four area teams got the news they’d been waiting for on Sunday afternoon with the announcement of the state softball tournament selections and brackets. The tournaments for all classifications begin on Thursday.

Robertson received the No. 7 spot in the Class 3A tournament and plays former district rival Santa Fe Indian School at noon Thursday on the campus of Cleveland High in Rio Rancho. The Lady Cardinals finished the regular season 14-12 overall and were District 2-3A runners-up under first-year head coach Adrian Jaramillo.

  • Miranda winning

After Miranda Garcia walked off the court at Jerry Cline Complex in May 2010, having just placed third in the Class 3A girls’ singles tennis tournament, she didn’t spend much time celebrating.

Instead, she began thinking about next year.

It would be a year of longer hours on the practice courts, a year of tougher workouts, a year of more focused preparation, a year of hard work and sweat equity — all leading to a much sweeter final outcome.

Pecos senior Yeshemabet Turner owned the jump pits over the weekend. Then she owned the awards podium — collecting five individual championships.
