  • State basketball pairings out

     

     

     

     

    New Mexico state bsketball tournament selections and first-round matchups have been announced by the NMAA.

    The Mora Rangerettes, champs of District 4-2A in girls' basketball, will host District 3 runner-up McCurdy on Friday evening at Montoya Gym.

    Pecos' Lady Panthers, as runner-up to Mora, will travel to Penasco, the champion in District 3.

  • WLV, RHS, Mora girls advance

    West Las Vegas and Robertson are headed to the quarterfinals of the New Mexico girls' state basketball tournament in Class 3A. Mora is moving on to the Class 2A quarters.

    WLV, the seventh seed in the tourney, overcame a strong first half by visiting No. 10 seed Ruidoso to win 58-48. The Lady Dons will play No. 2 Portales at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at The Pit in Albuquerque. Portales breezed past No. 15 Hatch Valley 61-17.

  • Cowboys score first sweep vs. UNK

    Break out the brooms. New Mexico Highlands’ baseball team tallied its first four-game sweep of the season, taking down league opponent Nebraska-Kearney over the weekend at Brandt Park.

    Scores were 16-4 and 6-5.

    The Cowboys are 22-13 overall and 13-7 in RMAC play.

    Highlands scored in each of the first three innings to stuff an 8-0 cushion over the Lopers in Sunday’s opener en route to a 16-4 win.

    The score was 12-1 after five frames.

  • RHS wins another state wrestling...

    Joseph Dominguez , Wally Diaz , Daniel Martinez and Dmitri Almanzar have won individual state championships for the Robertson wrestling program Saturday (Feb. 21) in Rio Rancho.... RHS held an 11-point team poitns lead over Bloomfield and St. Mike's going into the championship round ... West Las Vegas' John Armijo ended his prep wrestling career with a state championship at 171, edging Jake Winter of St. Mike's 4-2 in the final...

  • WLV honors state champ baseball...

    With Bruce Springsteen’s  blue-collar jock anthem  “Glory Days” cranked up on the public address system, the new faces of West Las Vegas baseball paid tribute to the program’s standard-bearers on a sunny, muddy Saturday at Dons Field.

    Current WLV coach Dean Gallegos and his team invited members of the 1968 and 1978 teams to take a bow and be recognized before Saturday’s home-opening doubleheader with Miyamura.

  • RHS golfer already in mix for...

    Jayme Quintana shot a 95 on March 16 at the Chamisa Hills Country Club in Rio Rancho, completing her final “leg” needed to qualify individually for the state golf tournament.

    The Robertson standout led the Lady Cardinals to a second-place team finish in the tournament, which opened the spring season for the golf program.

    The girls’ team posted an overall score of 430. 

    Quintana had a strong fall, earning the first two “legs” of qualification.

  • Dons sweep snow, young Miyamura

    “Stop the bleeding! Stop the bleeding now!”

    His objections aside, West Las Vegas baseball coach Dean Gallegos watched his team squander all of a six-run lead against a young Miyamura club — then come up with the plays necessary to pull ahead once more, this time for keeps.

    And so the Dons won 9-7 to complete a doubleheader sweep in its home opener Saturday. The close shave decision was a contrast to West’s methodical 10-0 shutout in game one, but taken together, the wins improve the Dons to 4-6 overall.

  • Sundevils scorch Dons in boys...

    Sandia Prep stood tall everywhere, including the free throw line, on Wednesday, eliminating West Las Vegas from the Class 3A boys' state basketball tournament 56-48.

    Outmatched in height and overall playoff experience, the Dons stayed close and held the lead a couple times through the middle of the third period. That's when Sandia Prep began to pull away behind a big effort from Kody Salcido, who finished with 20 points.

  • Cowboys stun No. 13 Wolves, win...

    The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys have started to roll as they have won three straight in a four-game series over nationally ranked No. 13 Colorado State-Pueblo.

    The Cowboys took the first three games by scores of 2-1, 20-4 and 17-16.

    Game one was a pitchers' duel as NMHU’s Drew Vassil and CSU-Pueblo's Mario Mattivi squared off. Vassil took this battle as he allowed only eight hits and one earned run in his nine-inning complete game performance. Vassil struck out four CSUP batters en route to his fourth win of the season.
