The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys have started to roll as they have won three straight in a four-game series over nationally ranked No. 13 Colorado State-Pueblo.

The Cowboys took the first three games by scores of 2-1, 20-4 and 17-16.

Game one was a pitchers' duel as NMHU’s Drew Vassil and CSU-Pueblo's Mario Mattivi squared off. Vassil took this battle as he allowed only eight hits and one earned run in his nine-inning complete game performance. Vassil struck out four CSUP batters en route to his fourth win of the season.

For the most part, at least, Wednesday’s District 2-3A girls’ basketball showdown between third-seeded West Las Vegas and fourth-seeded Robertson was evenly matched.

But one key stretch in the second quarter shifted momentum from the Lady Cardinals to the Lady Dons, and the home team was able to protect its lead after that en route to a 64-58 triumph.

As a result, West is playing in tonight’s semifinal at second-seeded St. Michael’s, and RHS is left to watch and wait.

Tonight at 7, West Las Vegas’ girls host Robertson in the second round of the District 2-3A tournament. The winner advances to play at second-seeded St. Michael’s on Thursday evening in Santa Fe. Then Thursday’s winner journeys to Jacona on Saturday to meet undefeated defending state champion Pojoaque Valley.
