    Gilbert “Gillie” Lopez was born on Jan. 11, 1922, and passed away on May 18, 2005. In the 83 years he lived on this earth, he left a mark that his family can be proud of. We will attempt to look at his life and recall some of the things that made the man.

    A sea of rippling muscles, etched-in details showcased by tanning and skimpy posing suits, will be on display this Saturday at the Fitness New Mexico and Musclemania Championships, a bodybuilding competition at Hard Rock Casino in Albuquerque.

    Las Vegas’ Stephanie Trujillo-Gonzales will be among the competitors vying for prizes — and showing off the hard-won efforts of months of religious pre-contest dieting and daily workouts with free weights, machines and cardiovascular training.

  • NMHU slugger honored in region

    New Mexico Highlands outfielder Clay Mohr has been named to the 2011 Rawlings American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Central Region Second Team.

    The honor was announced Wednesday.

    Mohr finished the season with a .387 batting average. Mohr connected for 12 doubles, five triples and three home runs over the course of the season.

    A number of Las Vegas-area athletes have been recognized with their selection to all-district, all-state and North-South All-Star teams for baseball and softball.

    CLASS 3A BASEBALL

    West Las Vegas seniors Nicholas Aragon and Corey Archibeque have been named to the Class 3A North baseball team.

    The North-South All-Star baseball game will be played June 10-11 in Socorro. Selection to the North-South teams is limited to top players from that year’s graduating high school class.

    A host of summer sports camps for various age groups and activities are scheduled in the coming weeks.

    The 2011 Don Woods Football Clinic will be held from Thursday, June 9, through Saturday, June 11, and will feature the camp’s namesake and 1975 NFL Rookie of the Year, an alumnus of New Mexico Highlands University.

    CHICAGO  — Right from the start, LeBron James made it clear he was going to attack and no one was going to stop him.

    Point taken.

    James came up big down the stretch with nine of his 29 points in the final 4:27, Dwyane Wade added 24 and the Miami Heat beat the Chicago Bulls 85-75 Wednesday night to tie the Eastern Conference finals at one game apiece.

    “It was a big game,” James said. “We felt like it was a must win for us going back home.”
