  • Hitting the home stretch

NMHU baseball (26-19, 22-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) won two of its first three games against visiting Colorado State-Pueblo (23-19, 19-14) with a chance to take a series victory on Sunday.

They were the last home games of the regular season for Highlands and more than a dozen key seniors on the squad.

The Cowboys won 5-1 on Friday, then split Saturday’s doubleheader with an 8-2 setback and a 13-8 victory.

  • Reports: Highlands’ Campbell to...

    Optic staff and wire reports

If All-American linebacker Jordan Campbell is to realize his dream of playing in the NFL, it will have to come via free agency — perhaps with the Cincinnati Bengals, with whom he reportedly signed late Saturday.

The New Mexico Highlands standout’s name was not among those called over the weekend as the NFL held its annual college draft in New York City.

But several blogger sites and Campbell himself reported via social media that he’d agreed to terms with the Bengals.

ROUND ROCK, Texas — Scott Van Slyke had three more hits and an RBI single in the fourth inning as the Albuquerque Isotopes defeated the Round Rock Express, 5-2, Saturday night at Dell Diamond.

Tony Gwynn Jr. and Dee Gordon also had RBI singles in the four-run fourth inning. Tim Federowicz, in his first game back with the ‘Topes, hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Van Slyke has 26 RBI in 22 games.

That was enough offense for the ‘Topes pitchers.

  • It’s West’s week

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and clinging to a 2-1 edge, the West Las Vegas baseball team watched warily as Robertson slugger Ryan Tafoya stepped up to bat.

“I asked our guys if we wanted to walk him or not,” said WLV head coach Ryan Gabaldon.

Ultimately, the Dons agreed they wanted to take their chances and pitch to Tafoya, who was coming off a career performance — three home runs, including a walk-off grand slam — against Pojoaque a few days earlier.

Alex Castellanos, Scott Van Slyke, Matt Angle, Alfredo Amezaga and Tony Gwynn all had three hits apiece, helping the ‘Topes climb back over .500 at 10-9.
