  • Fiesta Run draws crowd

    More than 300 runners and walkers of various ages took part in the 31st annual Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run this past Sunday morning.

    Henrique Chavez raced to a repeat championship in the 10-kilometer run, covering the Montezuma-to-Old Town stretch in 31 minutes and 37 seconds.

    Chavez’s younger brother and soon-to-be NMHU cross country teammate Alonzo Chavez, 17, was the youngest runner in the 10K. The oldest was 78-year-old Ted Rogers of Santa Fe.

  • Vegas, Roswell split

    Throughout this season, the Roswell Invaders have owned the penthouse of the Pecos League. But the Las Vegas Train Robbers — as demonstrated this past week — are knocking on the door.

    Vegas edged Roswell 6-5 in walk-off fashion this past Wednesday at Rodriguez Park. It was the teams’ first meeting since a season-opening series in Roswell, a series the Invaders won convincingly.

  • Sluggers take on district

    Highlights from the District 4 Little League tournaments in Santa Rosa reported to the Optic as of Saturday night:

    BASEBALL 9-10

    Las Vegas defeated Raton 16-6 on Saturday to reach the semifinals vs. La Plaza. La Plaza routed Springer 25-4 and host Santa Rosa 22-2 to get to that point.

    On Monday, many of the top athletes from the Class of 2013 gather in town as the annual Class 2A-3A North-South week gets under way.

  • Contest winners crowned

    An estimated seven dozen area youngsters age 9-12 put their baseball skills to the test in the City of Las Vegas’ recent Hit, Run and Throw Competition, culminating in the June 23 finals.

    The city’s recreation department hosted the contest, with sponsors including the city, PNM Resources, Las Vegas-San Miguel Chamber of Commerce and the Las Vegas Train Robbers.

  • Youth soccer sign-up opens

    Registration for the fall 2013 season of the Las Vegas Youth Soccer League opened on Monday and continues through Aug. 10, the league announced.
