Michael Phelps, in the pool, raising a fist. Usain Bolt, on the track, slapping his chest.

They are the two indelible images of the 2008 Beijing Olympics — celebration after celebration of gold medals and world records by the American swimmer and the Jamaican sprinter. Because of what they did four years ago, all eyes will be on them when they return to their sports’ biggest stages during the London Games, which open July 27.

Henrique Chavez set what is believed to be an event record and continued a strong summer by winning the Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run 10-kilometer race with a time of 31:42 on Sunday morning.

The Mora native and New Mexico Highlands distance runner eclipsed former NMHU teammate Nicaise Kazingo’s time of 32:49. Chavez called Kazingo — an All-American for the Cowboys — his “idol” and “mentor.”

Chavez added the Fiesta win to his victory in the 5K of the recent Fabian Trujillo Memorial Run.

A few wore memorabilia from the colleges or universities they plan to attend this fall.

But by the time they gathered for team pictures Monday afternoon, these star athletes from across New Mexico were sporting either North red or South blue.
