When he’s running, 8-year-old Damian Browne likes to imagine he’s flying a rocket, zooming toward the finish line.

That sci-fi approach must work.

Browne braved his first 5-kilometer race Friday morning in the annual Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run, running among mostly adult company. He finished in a respectable 37:09, good for first in his age division and 116th overall.

The San Miguel County 4-H organization and rodeo council, under the coordination of the County Extension Office, invites the public to the fourth annual sanctioned 4-H rodeos on Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Fe Trails Event Center (Zamora Arena).

Four-H members from across the state will compete in two rodeos for points toward all-around  and reserve awards and total weekend saddles.  Many local 4-Hers will be competing and are sitting well in standings after rodeos held in other counties.

The annual Fiestas de Las Vegas are a time for funnel cakes, turkey legs, cotton candy and green chile cheeseburgers — and a whole lot of calories that accompany such culinary delights.

But thanks to the traditional Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run, the city’s biggest party also features one of its premier fitness events.

This year, the run takes place Friday morning, serving to help kick off the fiesta weekend and — with a nod to the less healthful temptations available — get things off on the right foot, so to speak.

Saturday’s Las Vegas Little League minors division championship game will bring a close to the regular-season portion of the Meadow City’s Little League baseball season.

As of press time, the LVLL minors Red Sox were leading the charge, hoping to add the tournament title to the regular-season bragging rights as the division’s best team.
