  • Feds begin look at BCS system

    WASHINGTON — The Justice Department’s antitrust division will meet with the BCS this summer, following up on concerns the department raised with the NCAA about college football’s postseason format.

    Bowl Championship Series executive director Bill Hancock told The Associated Press on last week that a Justice Department attorney had asked for a voluntary background briefing on how the BCS operates. Hancock said he agreed to provide one, but that no date has been set yet.

    After weeks of unpredictable wind, more than 280 runners met on the Santa Fe Plaza to compete in the recent 33rd annual Santa Fe Runaround.

    Two area runners participated in the 5-kilometer and 10K events that  drew runners from as far away as California and New York — with one competitor coming from faraway Landschut, Germany.

    A host of summer sports camps for various age groups and activities are scheduled in the coming weeks.

    The 2011 Don Woods Football Clinic will be held from Thursday, June 9, through Saturday, June 11, and will feature the camp’s namesake and 1975 NFL Rookie of the Year, an alumnus of New Mexico Highlands University.

    Sprinter Wallace Spearmon wants in on the best rivalry track has going.

    With Usain Bolt breaking all the records and Tyson Gay hot on the Jamaican’s heels, Spearmon often has been lost in their shadow despite his strong performances.

    The four-time world championships medalist would like to think he’s closing the gap on them, especially in his favorite event, the 200 meters.

    And especially now, with the 2012 London Olympics right around the corner.
