  • Robbers debut in Roswell

Las Vegas Train Robbers baseball began its inaugural season with an 8-2 loss Tuesday night in Roswell.

  • Primos

A year ago, they were rivals, wearing different colors, battling it out for a district championship.

This spring, they are the most successful doubles partnership in New Mexico high school tennis.

Cousins David Romero and Amadeo Lopez mowed through the opposition in the Class 1A-3A boys’ doubles bracket over the weekend in Albuquerque to add a state championship to the district title they’d won a week earlier in Taos.

  • All-RMAC baseball: Six from NMHU

Six New Mexico Highlands University baseball players were selected to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams this year.

The Cowboys, led by head coach Steve Jones, finished the season with a 29-24 record. As a No. 3 seed in the 2013 RMAC Tournament, they went 1-2, losing to eventual runner-up and national powerhouse Colorado Mesa in an elimination game Saturday.

  • State golf: Quintana on edge of...

Several of the usual suspects were chipping about on the upper half of the leaderboard as day one of the Class 1A-3A state golf tournaments drew to a close Monday evening at New Mexico Tech in Socorro.

Kristen Cline of hometown school Socorro High held a one-stroke lead atop the girls’ standings with a first-round 75.

Nipping at her heels were Sandia Prep’s Klara Castillo and Socorro teammate Shania Berger, tied for second with a 76, and Socorro’s Mia Salome, fourth with a 78.

  • Amezaga boosts ‘Topes past 51s

Solid pitching, including three shutout innings by the bullpen, aided Albuquerque in a 5-2 win Monday night at Las Vegas, Nev.

The victory allowed the Isotopes to climb back to .500 at 19-19 overall. The Isotopes and 51s were to play once more Tuesday.

A four-run outburst by the Isotopes in the top of the seventh inning went unanswered and swung control to the visiting team. Alfredo Amezaga drove in three runs with a double to left field.

  • Three RHS netters take state

Add some more names to that championship wall adorning the LeRoy Fulgenzi tennis complex at Robertson High.

Juliana Guerin won her second consecutive (and third overall) Class 1A-3A state girls’ singles championship this past Thursday at Jerry Cline Complex in Albuquerque.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ David Romero and Amadeo Lopez paired up to win the boys’ doubles title.

Guerin outgunned friendly nemesis Paloma Gomez of St. Michael’s in a 6-2, 6-3, final match Thursday evening to wrap a dominant two-day run.

  • All Alonzo - Mora runner...

Good things came in threes for Mora senior distance runner Alonzo Chavez over the weekend at the Class 1A-2A state track and field championships.

Chavez went three for three, racing to state championships in the 800-meter run, the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run, capping a history-making prep career with the Rangers.

Going into the meet, Texico senior Colton Hollis loomed as Chavez’s main competition. But while Hollis did provide a challenge, the Mora star had the superior kick each time.
