  • NFL labor deal close?

    The Associated Press

The NFL told club executives they could be schooled in the ins and outs of the new labor contract as early as Thursday, and the players’ association summoned its leadership for a potential vote — the strongest signs yet the lockout might be nearing an end.

Lawyers for both sides met 8 1/2 hours Monday in New York, including 3 1/2 with a court-appointed mediator, to try to close a deal to resolve the sport’s first work stoppage since 1987. Talks were scheduled to continue Tuesday.

  • South takes 2 of 3

Class 2A or Class 3A? It didn’t matter.

Four 8-minute high school quarters or two 20-minute college-style halves? That didn’t matter either.

Yeshemabet Turner of Pecos took the changes all in stride, scoring eight of her 14 points in the first half to lead the North girls to an 87-58 blowout in Friday’s Class 2A-3A North-South All-Star girls’ basketball game at New Mexico Highlands University’s Wilson Complex.

  • LVLL 9-10 sluggers reach final...

TAOS — Las Vegas Little League’s 9-10 baseball team clobbered Clayton and Taos en route to a spot in Sunday’s championship game this past week in the District 4 tournament.

Sunday’s championship game concluded after this issue went to press.

The team began its run July 9, picking up a forfeit victory over Questa.

“Our boys were ready to play and upset they didn’t get an opportunity to,” said manager Nicholas Marrujo.

Las Vegas soon got its opportunity to play and made the most of it.

  • North-South bittersweet for some

Many of the North-South All-Stars lining up for the basketball or football games this weekend acknowledge that it’ll be a bittersweet moment for them.

Some may go on to play on the college level in 2011-12. Most will take part in at least some type of organized competition in the future. But at the very least, the North-South games mean the end of one major chapter in their lives.
