  • Fiesta run a family tradition...

    When he’s running, 8-year-old Damian Browne likes to imagine he’s flying a rocket, zooming toward the finish line.

    That sci-fi approach must work.

    Browne braved his first 5-kilometer race Friday morning in the annual Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run, running among mostly adult company. He finished in a respectable 37:09, good for first in his age division and 116th overall.

  • Little League tourneys to begin...

    Boasting a robust schedule with an estimated five dozen games in a week, the District 4 Little League All-Star tournaments for baseball and softball get under way on Saturday morning at Rodriguez Park.

    La Plaza Little League is this year’s district host for the 9-10, 10-11 and 11-12 age groups in both sports.

  • 4-H rodeo Saturday, Sunday in...

    The San Miguel County 4-H organization and rodeo council, under the coordination of the County Extension Office, invites the public to the fourth annual sanctioned 4-H rodeos on Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Fe Trails Event Center (Zamora Arena).

    Four-H members from across the state will compete in two rodeos for points toward all-around  and reserve awards and total weekend saddles.  Many local 4-Hers will be competing and are sitting well in standings after rodeos held in other counties.

  • Kryptonite take 3 of 5

    The Las Vegas Kryptonite played five games over the last week, pushing their record to 16-7.

    Las Vegas opened with two games against the Española Devils and the Española Trojans.

    In game one, Las Vegas earned a 6-4 victory against the Devils. Dominic Yara, who pitched his first game of the season, earned a complete-game victory, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out eight batters. Leading hitters for Las Vegas were Joel Silva, 2 for 2; T.J. Esquibel, 1 for 1; eight other Kryptonite players had at least one hit.

  • Fiesta run set for Friday morning

    The annual Fiestas de Las Vegas are a time for funnel cakes, turkey legs, cotton candy and green chile cheeseburgers — and a whole lot of calories that accompany such culinary delights.

    But thanks to the traditional Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run, the city’s biggest party also features one of its premier fitness events.

    This year, the run takes place Friday morning, serving to help kick off the fiesta weekend and — with a nod to the less healthful temptations available — get things off on the right foot, so to speak.

  • K-aos softball in state tourney

    A new 16-and-under softball team, the K-aos is battling in a double-elimination state tournament this weekend in Albuquerque and representing much of northern New Mexico.

    The team — managed by Steve Montoya and Coached by Dominique Montoya, Anthony Lovato and Pete Garcia — includes girls from Pojoaque, Española and Las Vegas who were in need of a program to continue playing through the summer.

  • Little League title game is...

    Saturday’s Las Vegas Little League minors division championship game will bring a close to the regular-season portion of the Meadow City’s Little League baseball season.

    As of press time, the LVLL minors Red Sox were leading the charge, hoping to add the tournament title to the regular-season bragging rights as the division’s best team.

  • Rodeo fever: Four from NMHU in...

    Jesse Estrada has had his share of thrills on the football field. As a star running back and linebacker for Robertson High, he played in multiple state championship games and scored a touchdown in the elite North-South contest reserved for the best of the best.

    But while he enjoyed the glory of the gridiron, Estrada — soon to be a sophomore at New Mexico Highlands University — says there’s nothing more exciting than trying to ride a bucking horse for eight seconds.

  • NMHU heptathlete a three-time...

    New Mexico Highlands University junior Angella Graham earned her third All-American honor of the season with a seventh place finish in the heptathlon at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 21-22 in San Angelo, Texas.

    Graham had earned All-American honors during the indoor season in both the pentathlon and long jump.

  • La Plaza champs crowned; All-...

    Cubs fans, rejoice!

    Cubs fans in La Plaza Little League, that is.

    With dual victories in Saturday's LPLL majors and minors division championship games, the league's two Cubs baseball outfits finished a week of playoffs the way they began the week -- as No. 1 in their respective divisions.

    On Saturday morning, the minors Cubs took down the White Sox 13-1 for the title.
