The New Mexico Highlands University women’s soccer coach and team will host  a soccer camp for local youth Tuesday, Aug. 4, through Thursday, Aug. 6, at Perkins stadium on campus.

The soccer camp hours are from 9-11:30 a.m. The camp is for boys and girls aged 5 to 14.  

The cost of the 3-day camp is $30 for those who pre-register and $35 the day of the camp. Those who have not pre-registered are asked to please arrive early on camp day.

Camp proceeds benefit the women’s soccer program.

The city is seeking an opinion from its attorney on the legality of giving $15,000 to help a private boxing promoter advertise an event on Aug. 28.

City Manager Timothy Dodge requested the opinion from City Attorney Carlos Quiñones. This was done at the prompting of City Councilwoman Diane Moore, the only council member who opposed giving the money.

Nathan Abreu, a 2009 Robertson High School graduate, has been selected as the recipient of the annual Michael William Marr Memorial Scholarship.

The Marr Scholarship has been awarded annually since the 1981-82 school year to a Robertson student athlete who excelled academically and participated in the football program.

A tragedy occurred on Nov. 11, 2006, that shocked northern New Mexico.  

A drunken driver speeding the wrong way down Interstate 25 slammed into a minivan, killing five members of a Las Vegas family. The crash killed Paul Gonzales; his wife, Renee Collins-Gonzales; and their daughters Jacqueline Gonzales, Selena Gonzales, and Alisha Garcia. Arissa Garcia, who has since graduated from West Las Vegas High School, was the sole survivor.
