  • Bean Day rodeo winners honored

Bean Day and the rodeo that accompanies it are always a big deal in Wagon Mound and northeastern New Mexico. But this year’s rodeo kicked up even more dust than usual.

“This year’s (rodeo) was one of the largest,” said Ron Luebke, secretary of the Wagon Mound Bean Day Association, in a news release submitted to the Optic. “Three action-packed days with 467 competitors. So winning a buckle was no easy chore.”

  • DAVE'S DRIVE-IN: '...

There are low-brow B movies dressed up as sports cinema, and then there is a real fumble like “Varsity Blues.”

A 1999 film written by W. Peter Iliff and directed by Brian Robbins, “Varsity Blues” chronicles what would happen if “Mutiny on the Bounty” met “Friday Night Lights,” except with far inferior character development, plot, dialogue, etc.

  • RHS golfers win in LA

With a team championship and a score of 395, Robertson’s girls’ golf team has qualified its first of three legs necessary to make the state tournament.

The Lady Cardinals took first place at the Los Alamos Invitational on Sept. 21. The team is five players deep with Jayme Quintana, Jamie Allen, Nina Martinez, Shannon Lopez and Karlee Bradley.

Quintana shot a 91, placing second individually; Allen had a 93 for a fifth-place finish. Both players also received a first individual leg for state.

  • Zias blank Cowgirls

Samantha Lawrence and the rest of the Eastern New Mexico Zias cooled down New Mexico Highlands’ women’s soccer team with a 3-0 win Monday in Portales.

Lawrence scored twice, including the Zias’ first-blood goal — 4:21 into the match — off a feed from Danielle Thurman. Thurman assisted the next goal as well, a Leslie Weber shot at the 9:43 mark. Highlands’ defense held up until the 46th minute, when Kandace Padilla passed to Lawrence from the right side for the last score of the afternoon.

  • Grizzlies win turnover battle,...

Two quick turnovers led to Adams State points Saturday evening, setting the tone for New Mexico Highlands’ homecoming defeat by a 27-7 count at Perkins Stadium.

Highlands is 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. ASC is 1-4, 1-2.

  • Dons stumble at Cobre

West Las Vegas football saw its winning streak come to a quick end Friday night as Cobre dealt the Dons (1-4) a 45-6 defeat in Bayard.

The host Indians were especially tough on defense. WLV, attempting to ride the momentum of its homecoming win over Crownpoint, tried in vain to run the ball with last week’s stars such as Jared Gallegos. But the Indians consistently got good defensive penetration and often reached the backfield to make tackles for loss or no gain.

By halftime, the score was 33-0.

  • Defense comes up big in Card win

Good defense was a pretty good offense for the Robertson Cardinals on Friday night.

The Redbirds delighted a robust homecoming crowd with a 44-0 victory over outmatched Taos to improve to 2-2 overall.

Robertson’s defense accounted for two touchdowns and a safety in the blowout win over a future District 2-3A opponent.

  • Tigers, Eagles win XC Jam

Los Lunas’ girls and Belen’s boys dominated the field in Saturday morning’s Meadow City Cross Country Jam held at a sun-splashed Rodriguez Park.

For local schools Robertson and West Las Vegas, the meet was seen as more of a chance to get younger runners some experience — and at least in the WLV girls’ case — allowing some depth to shine through.

Pecos, a regular in the Las Vegas meet, had a good day, placing third in the boys’ varsity race behind Belen and Peñasco.
