Robertson’s girls’ golf team qualified its second leg (of three) for the 2010 state tournament by winning the Sandia Prep Invite this past week in Albuquerque.

The Lady Cardinals had a 395 team score, led by Jamie Allen (who shot a 91) and Jayme Quintana (95) to place third and fourth, respectively. Allen and Quintana also qualified their second leg individually.

There are low-brow B movies dressed up as sports cinema, and then there is a real fumble like “Varsity Blues.”

A 1999 film written by W. Peter Iliff and directed by Brian Robbins, “Varsity Blues” chronicles what would happen if “Mutiny on the Bounty” met “Friday Night Lights,” except with far inferior character development, plot, dialogue, etc.

Samantha Lawrence and the rest of the Eastern New Mexico Zias cooled down New Mexico Highlands’ women’s soccer team with a 3-0 win Monday in Portales.

Lawrence scored twice, including the Zias’ first-blood goal — 4:21 into the match — off a feed from Danielle Thurman. Thurman assisted the next goal as well, a Leslie Weber shot at the 9:43 mark. Highlands’ defense held up until the 46th minute, when Kandace Padilla passed to Lawrence from the right side for the last score of the afternoon.

West Las Vegas football saw its winning streak come to a quick end Friday night as Cobre dealt the Dons (1-4) a 45-6 defeat in Bayard.

The host Indians were especially tough on defense. WLV, attempting to ride the momentum of its homecoming win over Crownpoint, tried in vain to run the ball with last week’s stars such as Jared Gallegos. But the Indians consistently got good defensive penetration and often reached the backfield to make tackles for loss or no gain.

By halftime, the score was 33-0.
