  • TUESDAY SPORTS UPDATE

    On Tuesday afternoon, Robertson's boys' soccer team opened its schedule with a 1-0 defeat of Portales on the road. After a scoreless first half, lightning and rain delayed the proceedings. But after the lengthy break, Robertson's Brandon Maes scored in the 73rd minute off a pass from Henry Robertson.

    RHS keeper Clint Brayfield notched three saves.

  • Fields of promise

    For years, Robertson High girls’ soccer coach Ray Parks and his assistants " notably Juan Carrillo " have invested time and energy in building the skills of younger players in addition to preparing the varsity for battle in rigorous Class 3A.

    Though such efforts haven’t been easy, the work is continuing to pay off " reaping class after class of capable players on a varsity squad that rarely needs outright rebuilding.

  • Boxing, football and more

    The wait is over.

    Most of the area's high school and college fall athletic programs kick off their schedules this week, and as if that weren't enough for sports fans, there's a major professional boxing card in town on Friday night.

  • RMAC soccer: Metro team to beat

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  —  Like their namesake from the old Saturday morning cartoons, the Metro State Roadrunners are used to outwitting even the wiliest of foes.

    A preseason coaches’ poll predicts Metro State as a league favorite in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s soccer. Should the Denver-based school live up to that billing, it would be an eighth straight RMAC women’s soccer championship.

  • Vatos back in business after...

    The Vegas Area Touring Side managed to finish 12-5 and earn a fifth-place ranking among the 42 teams in its division in 2008-09. The team made it to regional playoffs in Wichita, Kans., this past spring and put up a respectable showing.

    And still, these Vatos of New Mexico Highlands University are seeking new blood.

  • UNK favorite in RMAC volleyball

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  — The University of Nebraska at Kearney is predicted to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division and regular season titles in volleyball according to the league’s preseason coaches’ poll.

    The Lopers, who are the five-time defending RMAC regular season champions, are led by Preseason Player of the Year Jeri Walkowiak (Grand Island, Neb.) and Preseason Setter of the Year Cola Svec (Elkhorn, Neb.).

  • Chadron rated in national polls

    Several football teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic conference are among the top-rated in the nation, according to a pair of recent NCAA Division II preseason polls.

    D2Football.com, a Web-based publication, picked the RMAC’s Chadron State as the 15th best team in the country, as per its media poll.

    Chadron was 11-2 in 2008 and rolled up a league championship.

  • Horse play

    The San Miguel/Mora County Fair horse show, held Aug. 7-8, drew a number of spectators and participants ranging in age from 8 to 19 years old. The horse show’s organizers credit volunteer helpers and participants’ parents for helping to make the event a success.

Some baseball movies have been serious, like “Pride of the Yankees,” which took on Lou Gehrig’s story and his tearful departure after being diagnosed with the disease that now bears his name. Others have played up the romance and fantasy of the game, as in “Field of Dreams.” And then there’s the rollicking good times of a film like “Major League” and its sequels.
