  • LVCS 5th grade hoops tourney...

    The 11th annual Las Vegas City Schools Fifth-Grade Basketball Tournament is due to wrap up a three-day run Friday morning at Memorial Middle School Gym.

    Both boys’ and girls’ championship games will be Friday morning, said organizer and coach Mark Herrera.

    Coach Henry Sanchez first started this annual event when he was head boys’ basketball coach at Robertson.

  • Bustos out as RHS hoops coach

    David Bustos is apparently out of a job as Robertson boys’ basketball coach.

    Sources close to the school district and Bustos himself said he had been released from his coaching duties within the last week.

    The reasons for the change were not made public. Asked about it, Las Vegas City Schools Superintendent Sheryl McNellis-Martinez said, “All coaching positions were opened this year to allow for Mr. (Juan Carlos) Fulgenzi (director of co-curricular activities) to build a comprehensive athletic program under his direction.”

  • State seedings announced

    Good news wasn’t reserved only for church this past Sunday. Teams from across New Mexico learned they would be going to the state tournaments and learned of their seedings via the New Mexico Activities Association selection show.

  • Isotopes shut out Hawks

    John Ely struck out eight batters and gave up eight hits over six and one-third innings Monday night to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes to a 5-0 shutout of Oklahoma City.

    The game began an eight-game homestand for the Isotopes, who host the RedHawks through Thursday before entertaining Nashville for a four-game set.

    Ely bumped his record to 2-2; he has a 5.06 earned run average this season.

    Relievers Wil Ledezma and Shane Lindsay held Oklahoma City hitless the last two and two-thirds.

  • Bynum’s record day leads Lakers

    LOS ANGELES  — A day before Andrew Bynum produced one of the most eye-popping defensive performances in NBA playoff history, he spoke up to his Lakers teammates about the importance of getting off to a good start in their championship quest.

    With an NBA record-tying 10 blocked shots, the 7-foot All-Star center put the Lakers on the good foot — and the Denver Nuggets on their heels.

  • Cowboys sweep UNK

    The NMHU Cowboys completed their series sweep of the Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney with a 10-5 win on Sunday in front of a robust home crowd. It was the final home series of the season for Steve Jones and company.  

    The Pokes celebrated their seniors in their final home series of the season and sent them off in style with the win. The Cowboys will be graduating 10 seniors from their program this season.

  • Lady Dons district softball...

    Completing an unbeaten run through the District 2-3A schedule, the West Las Vegas softball team routed host Taos 18-0 and 20-1 on Saturday as the regular season came to a close on the road.

    The Lady Dons are 21-5 overall and 9-0 in district.
