  • Cardinals trounce Elks

Beginning with a safety and punctuated by a forced (and recovered) fumble, Friday night's 40-7 Robertson football victory over Pojoaque belonged largely to the Cardinal defense.

Consistently throughout the night, the host Redbirds harassed Elks quarterback Michael Garcia and they effectively shut down drive after drive from a Pojoaque team that has already eclipsed its previous best start to a football season.

  • Dave's Drive-In: Mostly...

In 1983, when “All the Right Moves” was hitting theaters, only a secondary role in “Taps” had separated a young Tom Cruise from obscurity.

This formulaic football movie helped get Cruise on the road to superstardom, but it has rightly been relegated to the bargain bin of modern sports cinema.

  • Cops take court Thursday night

A number of the Meadow City’s finest will be lacing up their sneakers for a good cause this Thursday night.

Las Vegas Police Department representatives will take on counterparts from the New Mexico State Police in a basketball game that tips off at 6 p.m. at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center. Admission to witness this contest is $1.

  • RMAC names soccer sites

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Metropolitan State College of Denver will host the 2009 RMAC Women’s Soccer Tournament November 6-8. The Roadrunners lead the RMAC with a 13-0-0 record.

Meanwhile, Fort Lewis College in Durango will host the 2009 RMAC Men’s Soccer Tournament Nov. 6-8 at Dirks Field. The Skyhawks lead the RMAC with a 10-0-0 record.

  • Redbirds outlast No. 5 Warriors

Dalan Abreu and Daniel Martinez scored touchdowns as Robertson slipped past Socorro 20-13 on Friday night.

It was a major non-district win for the Cardinals and coach Richard Martinez. Socorro entered the weekend ranked fifth in the New Mexico High School Coaches Association poll for Class 3A football.

The competitiveness of the game harkened back to another memorable Cards-Warriors meeting — in the 2006 state playoffs, when RHS squeaked out a 21-14 decision en route to a championship.

  • Wolves run by 'Pokes

Colorado State-Pueblo running back Jamaal Johnson gained 131 rushing yards on 18 carries Saturday night at Perkins Stadium, almost singlehandedly matching the New Mexico Highlands’ offensive total (153).

Johnson was one of seven CSUP players to gain positive yardage on the ground, helping the ThunderWolves pile up 269 rushing yards in a 35-7 win.

The Wolves evened their overall record at 4-4 and their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mark at 3-3; Highlands is 0-8, 0-6.

  • East beats West in soccer,...

Robertson picked up bragging rights with wins over West Las Vegas in soccer and volleyball this past Thursday.

The RHS boys’ soccer team, a favorite to regain the district title, sailed to a 10-0 win at RHS Field.

Henry Robertson’s hat trick, including the Cardinals’ fourth goal and the first two of the second half, was just the latest highlight in a strong season for the RHS junior.

Also scoring for the Redbird kickers: Keen Martinez, Jalen Martinez, Justin Abreu, Isaac Hidalgo, Charlie Armijo and Aaron Padilla.

  • WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Prep spikers...

West Las Vegas volleyball scored a key district win Saturday, while Robertson’s spikers put a scare into top-ranked Pojoaque on the road.

WLV defeated visiting Santa Fe Indian 25-19, 18-25, 25-14, 25-14. The Lady Braves are the No. 6 team in Class 3A — and the ninth ranked team West has played to date.

In Jacona, No. 1 Pojoaque held off No. 3 RHS 25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24. It was a considerably better show than an Oct. 1 sweep by the Elkettes over a shorthanded Lady Card group.

  • No. 3 Horsemen win messy

There have been some ugly moments in the long rivalry between West Las Vegas and St. Michael’s, and Saturday’s football game had a few to spare.

St. Mike’s, the third-ranked team in Class 3A, won 42-6 to keep pace with Raton, a 48-12 victor over Pojoaque, in District 2-3A. WLV fell to 2-6 and 0-2 in district.

For the Horsemen, the problem Saturday was penalties. Twice, they had scoring plays negated because of yellow flags, and the offense backed itself up repeatedly because of such miscues.

  • RHS, WLV take on Top Five foes

It’s a significant weekend ahead for local football teams, as Robertson and West Las Vegas hit the road to play a couple of the premier teams in Class 3A, while New Mexico Highlands is at home looking to break its drought.

RHS (3-3) visits Socorro (4-2), the No. 5 team in the state according to the Oct. 14 poll of the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. The Cardinals are ranked ninth in the same poll.
