  • Mustangs sweep Cowgirls

    Tuesday’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener saw Western New Mexico assert its volleyball supremacy over in-state rival New Mexico Highlands.

    The Mustangs prevailed in three sets, 25-17, 25-9, 25-14, dropping the Cowgirls to  1-9 overall.

    Dominique Benton and Doreen Zamora notched four kills each apiece to lead NMHU’s attack.

    Ziona Verhulsdonk and Christine Pina led a balanced Mustang offense with seven and six kills, respectively. WNMU made few mistakes and hit a blazing .485 in the sweep.

  • Teams look for rebounds at home

    Always focus on the next snap. Don’t think too long and hard about the last one. That’s something West Las Vegas football coach Mike Ulibarri says is his philosophy. It’s an approach the Dons — and Cardinals and Cowboys — will embrace this weekend as they try to put the bad taste of last weekend’s lopsided defeats out of their systems.

    On Friday night, Robertson hosts a tough 4A Moriarty while WLV meets one of 2A’s usual contenders, Tucumcari.

  • Highlands to sponsor golf...

    New Mexico Highlands University’s athletic department is hosting an upcoming golf tournament to benefit its scholarship fund.

    The inaugural NMHU Athletics Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Pendaries Village Golf Course in Rociada, north of town.

    Players may enter individually ($150 fee covers the cost of green fees, cart and dinner) or in groups of four ($500 per group).

    The tournament is also selling hole sponsorships at $250 per hole.

  • Cowgirls, youth league team up

    It was a win-win situation for the sport of soccer in the Meadow City on Aug.30.

    The Las Vegas Youth Soccer League teamed up with New Mexico Highlands University’s women’s soccer team to hold a LVYSL Day that Sunday at Perkins Stadium.

  • Rociada's Thompson hits...

    Fiestas are by definition a celebration, and at the recent Fiesta de Golf, Rociada resident Linda Thompson found herself celebrating that most coveted of golf achievements — the elusive hole in one.

    Thompson’s ace came in the midst of the Las Vegas Ladies Golf Association Tournament Fiesta de Golf held Aug. 26 at the Gene Torres Golf Course on the New Mexico Highlands University campus.

  • Lovington strong in 44-0 win

    In the NFL, the so-called Wildcat offense has really taken off, using the simple principle that opposing defenses should never be too sure which player will get the snap from center.

    In Friday night’s Robertson-Lovington game, the Wildcat offense worked no matter who was taking snaps from center.

    Lovington (1-1) had three quarterbacks rotate into the contest, all successfully, and two of them — juniors Jacob Jameson and Kyler Gilbreath — orchestrated what may be the state’s best gridiron attack in a 44-0 defeat of host Robertson (0-2).

  • Washburn heartburn for Cowboys

    Both the Cowboys and Ichabods demonstrated offensive balance on Friday night in Topeka, Kans. The home team just had a lot more firepower in an 82- 21 romp.

    Washburn improved to 2-0 and sent New Mexico Highlands to 0-2 in a dominant performance that churned out 534 yards of offense, including 284 on the ground and 250 through the air.

    That overshadowed an improved effort from Chad Roanhaus’ Cowboys, who piled up 141 yards passing and 128 rushing, including a 103-yard game by Robert Grant.

  • Bears maul young Dons 50-0

    One miserable second quarter reduced an otherwise competitive —  if ugly — game into a blowout Saturday afternoon at Perkins Stadium.

    Visiting Estancia scored 44 points in that 12-minute span en route to a 50-0 victory over West Las Vegas, spoiling the home debut of the Dons and first-year head coach Mike Ulibarri.

    Bears quarterback Destry Oberg went 12 of 29 for 286 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Derek Georgia. Oberg rushed for an additional score in the middle of the decisive second-period barrage.
