    Editor’s note: Patrick Swayze, who maintained a residence and ranch in the Las Vegas area, died Monday after a protracted battle with pancreatic cancer. In a salute to Swayze, we present a look back at one of his early films, which happens to fit the sports movie genre being covered in the Dave’s Drive-In series.

    In January 1986, when the hockey film “Youngblood” hit theaters, Rob Lowe was already top shelf as one of America’s hottest commodities. And costar Patrick Swayze was skating close to the crease of superstardom.

  • Dons stung by Raiders

    For all the little improvements the young West Las Vegas Dons made from week two to week three, they felt snakebit Friday in a 27-0 loss to visiting Tucumcari.

    Unlike a week earlier in a 50-0 defeat to Estancia, there were no disastrous quarters for West. There were no strings of turnovers and botched special teams plays. There were some more Dons highlights that indicate, perhaps, better times to come.

    But the Rattlers (3-0), led by big, burly lines on both sides of the ball, consistently outplayed the Dons.

    Reaching the championship match of any given tournament has become a habit for Robertson’s volleyball team.

    The Lady Cardinals (4-1) came away with a runner-up finish in this past weekend’s Zia Classic in Roswell.

    Robertson is ranked No 1 among the state’s Class 3A teams. Coach Rayne Gerhart’s Lady Cards are two-time state runners-up.

    The team followed a brilliant showing in pool play with a 3-0 defeat of Roswell’s junior varsity on Friday and a 3-1 win over Lubbock Christian on Saturday morning.

  • Red over blue

    A booming goal by junior Henry Robertson boosted his namesake Cardinals to a 1-0 victory Monday afternoon against always formidable Santa Fe Prep.

    Robertson scored the game’s lone goal in the 59th minute, dribbling the ball swiftly into open space and then taking it all the way through the box before zipping it past the Blue Griffins’ goalkeeper.

    That broke a two-and-a-half game scoreless streak for RHS (3-2).

  • Cardinals soar into win column

    Sophomore Girard Maestas, forced into the quarterback’s job due to injury, scored three touchdowns in the second half to lead Robertson past visiting Moriarty 25-12 on Friday night at Cardinal Stadium.

    The victory was the first not only for a young Robertson squad but for all of the Meadow City’s football teams, which had gone a combined 0-6 entering the weekend.

    RHS is 1-2; Moriarty, a solid Class 4A outfit, fell to 1-2.

    Maestas took over as QB late in the first half after starter Daniel Martinez got banged up.

  • Mavs run past Cowboys to open...

    Mesa State College racked up 319 rushing yards on 43 carries — an average of 7.4 yards a carry — in a 51-7 beating of New Mexico Highlands on a rainy Saturday at Perkins Stadium.

    It was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football opener for both teams. Mesa is 1-2 overall; Highlands 0-3.

    Joey Applehans did much of the damage for the Mavericks, rushing 17 times for 179 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Will Halboth rushed for an additional 96 yards and a TD.

  • Mustangs sweep Cowgirls

    Tuesday’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener saw Western New Mexico assert its volleyball supremacy over in-state rival New Mexico Highlands.

    The Mustangs prevailed in three sets, 25-17, 25-9, 25-14, dropping the Cowgirls to  1-9 overall.

    Dominique Benton and Doreen Zamora notched four kills each apiece to lead NMHU’s attack.

    Ziona Verhulsdonk and Christine Pina led a balanced Mustang offense with seven and six kills, respectively. WNMU made few mistakes and hit a blazing .485 in the sweep.

  • Teams look for rebounds at home

    Always focus on the next snap. Don’t think too long and hard about the last one. That’s something West Las Vegas football coach Mike Ulibarri says is his philosophy. It’s an approach the Dons — and Cardinals and Cowboys — will embrace this weekend as they try to put the bad taste of last weekend’s lopsided defeats out of their systems.

    On Friday night, Robertson hosts a tough 4A Moriarty while WLV meets one of 2A’s usual contenders, Tucumcari.

  • Highlands to sponsor golf...

    New Mexico Highlands University’s athletic department is hosting an upcoming golf tournament to benefit its scholarship fund.

    The inaugural NMHU Athletics Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Pendaries Village Golf Course in Rociada, north of town.

    Players may enter individually ($150 fee covers the cost of green fees, cart and dinner) or in groups of four ($500 per group).

    The tournament is also selling hole sponsorships at $250 per hole.

  • Cowgirls, youth league team up

    It was a win-win situation for the sport of soccer in the Meadow City on Aug.30.

    The Las Vegas Youth Soccer League teamed up with New Mexico Highlands University’s women’s soccer team to hold a LVYSL Day that Sunday at Perkins Stadium.
