  • So close! Cowboys lose by 2

    Every point mattered Saturday as host Western State edged New Mexico Highlands 21-19 in a meeting of two winless Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football teams in Gunnison, Colo.

    The Cowboys had drawn within two on a Jordan Mendoza-to-Kevon Williams 13-yard touchdown with 43 seconds left. But Wallace Lebrane fumbled on the ensuing 2-point conversion attempt.

    Earlier, the Mountaineers blocked a Luis Marin extra point kick that would have tied the game late in the third quarter.

    It’s as close as the Cowboys (0-4, 0-2 RMAC) have come to a win this season.

  • Vatos split on the road

    GUNNISON, Colo. — After defeating hapless Adam State College 32-0, the NMHU Vatos rugby club lost a close game 15-12 to host Western State College in Gunnison this past Saturday.

    It was the first time in 18 years and more than 40 matches that the Vatos (1-2) have lost to a fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rugby team.

    For his hard tackling and running, alumnus Ryan Means was the “Man of the Match” for the Vatos.

  • Homecoming triumph!

    It didn’t take long Friday night for the West Las Vegas Dons to end their scoreless drought.

    Five minutes and 25 seconds into West’s homecoming game with Crownpoint, George Martinez hit Spencer Parson for an 11-yard touchdown, giving the Dons their first points of the season.

    There would be more where that came from.

    Looking increasingly cohesive, the Dons scored six first-half touchdowns en route to a 49-6 victory in front of a couple thousand fans at Perkins Stadium.

  • RMAC schools top cross-country...

    Adams State College is still the school to beat when it comes to distance running in NCAA Division II.

    It’s hardly a surprise, given the string of national championships the Grizzlies own, but ASC is ranked No. 1 in both men’s and women’s polls of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released Sept. 16.

  • West Las Vegas spikers outgun...

    In a matchup between two area teams hoping to reach the state tournament in November, West Las Vegas pulled out a four-set win over Mora on Wednesday night at the Gillie Lopez Gymnasium.

    Coach Brian Gurule’s Lady Dons prevailed 25-15, 18-25, 27-25 and 25-18. West improved to 3-4 overall; Mora fell to 4-4.

    Perhaps toughened by a recent clash with Class 4A power Goddard, the Lady Dons controlled game one in a 25-15 win.

  • Dons hunting a homecoming win

    West Las Vegas’ football team (0-3) is hungry not only for its first victory but for its first trip to the end zone this season.

    The Dons appear to have a good shot at both Friday night when Crownpoint visits Perkins Stadium.

    For one thing, it’s homecoming, and with Robertson taking its bye week, there will be only one football game of local interest on tap. Those factors could give WLV its most robust and spirited crowd of the season (with the possible exception of the season-ending Vegas Bowl).

  • No. 20 Mines tops HU

    GOLDEN, Colo. — The 20th ranked Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team posted its first win in conference play this season defeating New Mexico Highlands 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at the CSM Soccer Stadium.

    Kayla Mitchell gave CSM a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute as she controlled a ball in the box and beat a Highlands defender to score.

  • Lady Dons run in top four again

    Led by a pair of strong individual races from Amanda Ortzow, the West Las Vegas girls’ cross country team has cracked the top four in two straight meets to open the season.

    The Lady Dons were fourth in the Sept. 5 Española Invite and matched that showing Saturday at Jemez Valley, where more than a dozen schools vied for top honors.

    Ortzow, a junior, placed fourth individually both meets to pace the Lady Dons — first with a time of 20:41, then in 23:34.

In a salute to Swayze, we present a look back at one of his early films, which happens to fit the sports movie genre being covered in the Dave’s Drive-In series.

    In January 1986, when the hockey film “Youngblood” hit theaters, Rob Lowe was already top shelf as one of America’s hottest commodities. And costar Patrick Swayze was skating close to the crease of superstardom.
