Perennial state contender St. Michael’s ended the Robertson Lady Cardinals’ winning streak at two matches Tuesday, controlling the field in a 4-0 shutout.

The Lady Cardinals (3-10) play at Santa Fe Prep on Saturday and close with a string of district games. Going into Tuesday, the team had won two straight shutouts — a 10-0 romp over Española and Saturday’s district-opening 5-0 victory over Moreno Valley.

St. Mike’s improved to 10-6 overall.

Tough competition on the gridiron awaits all three local teams.

New Mexico Highlands plays the current No. 1 team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference — Nebraska-Kearney — on Saturday, looking for what would be a monumental upset.

The visiting Lopers are 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the RMAC, tied with Colorado School of Mines for the top spot. And they are the 21st ranked team in NCAA Division II.

NMHU is 0-6 and 0-4 in league play after falling 51-7 at defending RMAC champ Chadron State.

Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Perkins Stadium.

Fortune smiled down on the Meadow City’s high school football teams over the weekend. The college team, meanwhile, is still waiting for a break.

Robertson sophomore fullback blasted his way across the goal line for a go-ahead touchdown with just 35 seconds remaining in regulation on Friday night, giving the Cardinals a come-from-behind win at Ruidoso.

In a game that saw both defenses yield but ultimately hold scoring to a minimum, the host Warriors took a 7-0 advantage at halftime.

Ruidoso led much of the game and held a 7-6 edge late in the fourth quarter.

In their 24-7 loss to a good Division 2 El Paso-UTEP Rugby Club (3-0) last Saturday in Perkins Stadium, the Division 3 NMHU Vatos (1-3) were again shown the level of rugby that they will need to be competitive at the national level next spring.

The Vatos won the second half and missed numerous scoring options through poor decisions and inexperience, said adviser Dick Greene.
