  • Valley spikers go undefeated

    Thirteen middle school student-athletes from Sena, Bernal, Ribera, Gonzales Ranch, Curuco, Villanueva, San Jose and Ancon did what many thought was unthinkable this past volleyball season — going undefeated — winning 14 consecutive games for the Valley Middle School Roadrunners.

  • Ortzow, Hutchinson, Maestas...

    Amanda Ortzow’s 18th place individual finish was a highlight of Saturday’s Jaguar Invitational cross country meet hosted by Capital High School in Santa Fe.

    The West Las Vegas junior had a time of 21:32 in the girls’ varsity race.

    Kaitlin Hutchinson won the girls’ junior varsity race with a time of 22:22, pacing the Robertson Lady Cardinals to a fourth place team result. RHS teammate Heather Aragon joined her in the top 10 (10th, 23:54).

  • No. 13 unlucky for 'Pokes

    Defense kept New Mexico Highlands in the game for most of the first half, but the overwhelming strength of Nebraska-Kearney prevailed in a 52-3 rout Saturday at Perkins Stadium.

    UNK, which jumped from 21st to 13th in the NCAA Division II national rankings this past week, is the No. 1 team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 6-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.

    Highlands fell to 0-7, 0-5, and will try again for its first win Saturday when Colorado State-Pueblo comes to town.

  • RHS soccer teams pitch shutouts

    Rheanne Parks’ successful penalty kick nearly 62 minutes into the match lifted Robertson to a 1-0 triumph over Santa Fe Prep in girls’ soccer action on a cool Saturday afternoon at RHS field.

    And Lady Cardinal goalkeeper Maggie Duran made a whale of a save with 2:20 remaining in regulation, leaping vertically to stop a well-placed shot that arced just below the crossbar.

  • Top-rated Tigers stingy vs. Cards

    Ranked atop the Class 3A football polls much of this season, the Raton Tigers are getting used to being front-runners.

    They still had a bit of trouble from visiting Robertson on Friday night, as the Cardinals stayed within striking range until late in the game. A late touchdown for Raton made the final margin 26-8.

    Raton QB Dustin Walton was a force all game, and his 3-yard TD pass with 7:47 left in the second quarter put an end to a long scoring drought by both sides.

  • Elks look legit, top Dons

    So is that Pojoaque football team legit?

    After Friday, the West Las Vegas Dons might be inclined to say yes.

    The Elks ran their record to 6-1 with a 28-18 decision against the Dons at Perkins Stadium in the District 2-3A opener for both schools.

    It continues a brilliant start for Pojoaque, which had been an also-ran in the district’s football race for years.

    But it was a closer game than the final score indicated, and with 10 minutes left, the Dons trailed by a mere three points.

  • Highlands runner takes OSU race

    Nicaise Kazingo showed his racing ability Saturday in Stillwater, Okla., taking top honors at the Oklahoma State Cross Country Jamboree.

    Running in the college division against nearly 240 runners, the New Mexico Highlands sophomore covered the 8-kilomer course in 25:00 to win by nearly 20 seconds.

  • St. Mike's handles Lady...

    Perennial state contender St. Michael’s ended the Robertson Lady Cardinals’ winning streak at two matches Tuesday, controlling the field in a 4-0 shutout.

    The Lady Cardinals (3-10) play at Santa Fe Prep on Saturday and close with a string of district games. Going into Tuesday, the team had won two straight shutouts — a 10-0 romp over Española and Saturday’s district-opening 5-0 victory over Moreno Valley.

    St. Mike’s improved to 10-6 overall.

  • Cowboys search for elusive win

    It’s been a trying season in Cowboy country, as New Mexico Highlands University’s football team continues to seek victory six games into the schedule.

    Unfortunately for Highlands fans, wins appear difficult to come by in the immediate future. Nebraska-Kearney, this coming Saturday’s opponent, and Colorado State-Pueblo are two of the better teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. UNK is 5-1, 4-0 RMAC. CSUP is 3-3, 2-2.

    The Cowboys have averaged 10.2 points a game while allowing 45.5, accumulating 210.2 yards of offense to 415 for the opposition.

  • Lopers looming large

    Tough competition on the gridiron awaits all three local teams.

    New Mexico Highlands plays the current No. 1 team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference — Nebraska-Kearney — on Saturday, looking for what would be a monumental upset.

    The visiting Lopers are 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the RMAC, tied with Colorado School of Mines for the top spot. And they are the 21st ranked team in NCAA Division II.

    NMHU is 0-6 and 0-4 in league play after falling 51-7 at defending RMAC champ Chadron State.

    Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Perkins Stadium.
