  • Too close for comfort

Celeste Trujillo hit two game-tying free throws with nine seconds left, and teammate Deanna Bustos swished the game-winners with :02 on the clock Friday night, lifting West Las Vegas (14-5) past Raton 54-52 at Gillie Lopez Gym.

As time expired, Raton’s Brylee Medina hurled a desperation shot that just missed, banking off the rim.

By holding off the Lady Tigers, West averted what could’ve been a disastrous loss in District 2-3A play. The Lady Dons also found a way to gain a happy ending to a generally miserable contest for them.

  • Dons bomb Raton in 44-point rout

Twelve West Las Vegas players got into the scorebook Thursday night and the Dons began their District 2-3A campaign by doubling up Raton 82-38 at Gillie Lopez Gym.

West (6-13) was on pace to score 100, but the mercy-rule running clock — triggered when the lead hits 35 — made for a quick second half.

The spread hit 63-28 midway through the third quarter after a Mike Ortiz three-pointer and stayed in 35-plus territory after a Martin Castellano three-ball moments later.

  • Highlands pentathlete makes...

Less than a year after a season-ending injury and subsequent surgery, New Mexico Highlands’ Danisha Phipps opened the 2013 indoor track and field season with a personal record of 3,337 points in Thursday’s Air Force meet in Colorado Springs.

Phipps’ point total placed her fourth out of 35 — a field of mostly Division I athletes — and moved her into the top 10 nationally among Division II pentathletes.

  • Rangerettes close out Clayton

Sinking nine of 10 free throws in the final period, Mora beat Clayton 42-25 Friday in girls’ basketball, improving to 14-2.

Mora got 16 points from Chantel Rivera and 15 from Destiny Pacheco and seven from Gerdy Herrera.

The Yellow Jackets led 17-16 at half, but Mora held them to two points in the third quarter.

  • Nip and tuck - Lady Dons defeat...

Going down to the last minute, the first district girls’ basketball game of the year went to West Las Vegas, 55-50, on Wednesday at Mike Marr Gym.

The Lady Dons (13-5) sealed the win when Celeste Trujillo caught a full-court lob from Deanna Bustos, made a short sprint ahead of the Robertson defense, and laid the ball up and in. The sequence left the host Lady Cardinals less than a full second to try a desperation shot that went awry.

  • Cowboys’ NFL dreams kindled in...

While it’s unclear what kind of impression New Mexico Highlands linebacker Jordan Campbell made on NFL scouts in this past weekend’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, he certainly grabbed the attention of sportscasters calling the game.

Campbell drew raves with his individual effort for Herm Edwards’ American team, which lost 34-0 to Dick Vermeil’s National squad.

“He’s got exactly what you want in a linebacker — read and react,” said Bill Polian. Polian is best known for his years as an executive with the Indianapolis Colts.

  • Cardinal frontcourt key in...

Robertson didn’t need much of an opening, and when the visiting Mora Rangers had a three-and-a-half-minute dry spell early in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals took full advantage.
RHS rolled to a 72-59 win before a strong bipartisan crowd Tuesday night at Mike Marr Gym.

Ryan Tafoya, attacking the rim with bad intentions, led the Cardinals with 22 points, eight of which came in the final period.

Mora’s Lorenzo Chavez scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter, which ended in a 17-17 tie.
