  • No gimmes in homestand

Colorado Christian increased its season win total by 50 percent at the expense of host New Mexico Highlands on Friday and Saturday at Brandt Park.

Game one of the four-game series saw the Cougars triumph 7-6 in extra innings. The score was even at 5-5 in the top of the 10th when Jake Balbas went up to bat and drilled an RBI double to left center, scoring Justin Ray from second. Mark McMahon followed with a single, then wound up scoring from second on a botched relay from centerfield.

  • I-Cubs, Isotopes split first two...

Alfredo Amezaga collected two base hits against his old teammates but it wasn’t enough to get the Albuquerque Isotopes a road victory against the Iowa Cubs on Saturday in Des Moines.

The I-Cubs recorded a 6-1 win, their first this season against Albuquerque, which swept them in the season-opening series April 4-7 at Isotopes Park.

Amezaga, a veteran infielder, started at second base and went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and one run batted in — he drove in Brian Barden for the Isotopes’ only run in the top of the second inning.

  • The GIFT of GAB

When she was little, Gabrielle Griego wanted to be a dancer, not a softball player.

To this day the whole cheer and dance scene seems to fit her pretty well, from the megawatt smile to the pink ribbon in her hair.

Ah, but look a little closer and if you ask real nice, Gabby will show you the teeth she broke a couple seasons ago catching a hard line drive to the face during a game for the West Las Vegas Lady Dons softball team.

  • Big triumphs for Romero

Robertson’s David Romero carved out a second head-to-head victory over Santa Fe High’s Warren Fulgenzi Jr. this season in the Española Invite on April 6. This time the win came because of a forfeit due to injury, but it gave Romero a hard-fought tournament title nonetheless.

Romero — playing for Warren Jr.’s uncle Roman, the RHS head coach — had beaten Warren 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in a thriller at the recent Carlsbad Invite.

  • Cardinals’ Baca shines in Combine

Las Vegas’ Mathew Baca, 14, earned rave reviews in the recent Schuman’s National Underclassmen Combine held in Farmington.

National Underclassmen Combine is a football competition where athletes showcase their football skills and talents in such activities as the 40-yard dash, shuttle, broad jump, vertical jump, jump reach, standing reach, and bench reps.

The athletes are also tested on their position-specific football skills and knowledge. They are then ranked by former NFL players and college coaches.
