  • Greyhounds edge Cowboys

    Eastern New Mexico won its fourth game in six tries this season against New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday evening, pulling out a 6-4 decision in Portales.

    NMHU is 14-8 overall; ENMU improved to 12-10.

    Down 6-3 going into the ninth inning, Highlands looked to rally but generated just one run against the pitching of Greyhounds closer Ryan Pruitt, who picked up the save.

    Three New Mexico Highlands wrestlers are among the 2012-13 NCAA Division II All-Academic Wrestling Teams announced at the recent NCAA Division II National Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

    The NMHU wrestlers selected are Easton Hargrave, a human performance and sport major with a 3.57 grade point average; Igor Gomzin, an accounting major with a 3.88 GPA; and Justin Rockhill, a forestry major with a 3.26 GPA.

    All three wrestlers will be returning to the team next season.

    Las Vegas Youth Soccer League’s spring season commences this weekend with a full lineup of matches. The spring season resumes play from the fall and runs weekly through May 18-19.

  • Crespin fights next weekend

    Las Vegas professional boxer Amanda Crespin is scheduled to be back in the ring next weekend.

    Crespin fights as part of Chavez Promotions’ “Warehouse Rumble III,” on Friday, March 29, at Albuquerque’s Wool Warehouse.

    Doors open at 6 p.m., and first bell will ring at 7.

    Crespin (7-4-1, two wins by knockout) will go six rounds with rival featherweight Nohime Dennison (4-2-2). Dennison defeated Crespin in two previous encounters.

    Professor Michael Magazine is upending the logical world of math with a good dose of March Madness.

    Magazine teaches a new class called Bracketology at University of Cincinnati, the home of the 10th-seeded Bearcats, where 33 business students are spending the semester trying to make sense out of what can feel nonsensical at times — the art of filling out an NCAA tournament bracket.

  • Sacrifices help Cowboy sluggers...

    Punctuating the game with the big inning they’d been looking for, the Highlands baseball team defeated Metro State 7-2 Sunday and ended up with a split of the four-game weekend series at Brandt Park.

    The Cowboys and head coach Steve Jones improved to 14-7 overall and 10-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

    Josh McMahon, Highlands’ third baseman, drove in four runs and went 4 for 5 at the plate in one of the better individual efforts of the season to date.

  • B.J. Gonzales hoops fest begins...

    March Madness isn’t just about high school or college basketball. It’s also about the 11th annual B.J. Gonzales Tournament, to be held Friday through Sunday at Gillie Lopez Gym.

    Spectators are welcome.

    The tournament is a 12-team double-elimination format bracket and brings to town some of the most competitive recreational hoops available in the region.
